Africa-Press – Uganda. Denmark has mobilised USD 62 million (about Shs 230 billion) to support Uganda’s refugee response, exceeding its initial pledge of USD 50 million made under the Global Refugee Forum commitments.
The Minister of State for Disaster Preparedness, Relief and Refugees, Lillian Aber, announced the development following a meeting with the Danish Ambassador to Uganda, H.E. Signe Winding Albjerg.
Aber said the additional funding demonstrates Denmark’s “strong and reliable partnership” with Uganda in addressing the needs of refugees and host communities.
“I expressed our sincere appreciation to the Government of Denmark for mobilizing USD 62 million towards its Global Refugee Forum pledges—exceeding the initial commitment of USD 50 million,” Aber said.
She noted that the meeting focused on Denmark’s continued support to Uganda’s refugee response, particularly in refugee-hosting districts.
According to Aber, Denmark is prioritising climate resilience interventions, including support to agriculture, environmental protection, sustainable energy, and women’s empowerment in communities hosting refugees.
The minister also welcomed Denmark’s backing of the Strengthening of Adolescents and Youth Empowerment (SAY) Programme, which she said has improved access to sexual and reproductive health services and strengthened response mechanisms among young people.
“We commend Denmark’s focus on climate resilience in refugee-hosting districts,” Aber said, adding that the government looks forward to continued collaboration to strengthen resilience and safeguard Uganda’s refugee response model.
Uganda hosts one of the largest refugee populations in Africa, with the majority living in settlements across northern and western regions, placing significant pressure on natural resources and social services in host communities.
Aber reaffirmed government’s commitment to working with development partners to sustain the country’s progressive refugee policy amid growing humanitarian needs.
