Africa-Press – Uganda. Uganda and Egypt have further strengthened their relations by activating a visa waiver for diplomatic and service passport holders for both countries.

Addressing journalists on Monday, the Ministry of Internal Affairs spokesperson, Simon Mundeyi said that the visa waiver agreement has officially taken effect, allowing holders of specified passports to travel between the two countries without a visa.

“Talks have been ongoing and I am now happy to report we have achieved visa free travel for official and diplomatic passport holders from Uganda and Egypt visiting Uganda,”Mundeyi said.

He however said the requirement for visas is still applicable for ordinary passport holders, a category where majority of Ugandans fall.

Uganda and Egypt maintain strong, strategic, and historically deep relations, focusing on Nile water cooperation, agricultural investment, and regional security.

The two countries have also signed agreements for cooperation in trade and investment to agriculture, water management, and community development.

President Museveni recently challenged the perception that Uganda is landlocked, saying its natural connection to the Mediterranean through the Nile has only been hindered by political instability in Sudan.

“If there were no problems in Sudan, we would not be called landlocked. We are connected to Egypt because of the Nile,” he said while meeting his Egyptian counterpart, Abdel Fattah El-Sisi in Cairo last year.
