Africa-Press – Uganda. Liberty General Insurance Uganda’s innovative motor insurance product, Protecta Bode, has been honored with the Judges’ Special Award at the 2025 IRA Insurance Innovation Awards.
The accolade underscores the product’s role in transforming access to affordable motor insurance and its contribution to building safer and more financially secure communities across Uganda.
Uganda’s roads are bustling, with thousands of motorists navigating highways, streets, and trading centers every day. Yet behind this vibrant movement lies a pressing challenge: road accidents and the financial vulnerability they often leave behind.
Each year, numerous road crashes occur nationwide, resulting in fatalities, injuries, and substantial property damage. Many vehicle owners, especially private motorists and small operators, remain uninsured or underinsured due to the high cost of comprehensive coverage.
Protecta Bode addresses this gap by offering mid-level motor insurance protection at an affordable premium of just 1.5% of a vehicle’s value, making insurance accessible to a larger segment of Ugandan drivers.
The product provides coverage for third-party bodily injury and death, third-party property damage, driver medical treatment, personal accident expenses, and damage to vehicle body parts, including windscreens and lights.
By doing so, it safeguards motorists from the financial devastation that can follow accidents and contributes to national efforts to reduce the economic impact of road crashes.
A defining feature of Protecta Bode is its digital-first distribution and servicing model. Through strategic partnerships with technology-driven mobility platforms such as SafeBoda and its vehicle platform SafeCar, motorists can now purchase insurance seamlessly via platforms they already rely on daily.
The integration streamlines the entire insurance journey, from digital onboarding and vehicle inspections to claims processing, ensuring the system is user-friendly even for those with limited insurance knowledge.
Since its initial rollout, Protecta Bode has recorded impressive milestones, including the collection of shs120 million in premiums, the insurance of 60 vehicles, and over 300 vehicles in the onboarding pipeline. Early claims have already been settled, reinforcing trust in the system.
Beyond insurance coverage, Protecta Bode is anchored in a strong ecosystem of partnerships. Collaboration with Easy Ride Uganda, for instance, ensures nationwide road rescue services, providing motorists with rapid assistance during emergencies or breakdowns.
Partnerships with motor traders and automotive stakeholders allow insurance to be offered at the point of vehicle purchase, ensuring motorists are protected from the moment they hit the road.
The product also embodies Liberty’s commitment to responsible business practices and sustainable impact through Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles.
Digital processes for onboarding, inspection, and claims reduce paperwork and administrative waste, while expanded access to affordable insurance mitigates financial shocks and promotes safer driving practices. Transparent processes, structured partnerships, and simplified documentation enhance accountability and trust in Uganda’s insurance sector.
For Liberty General Insurance Uganda, Protecta Bode represents more than just a new product; it signifies a shift toward inclusive insurance designed for everyday Ugandans.
By combining affordability, digital innovation, and strategic partnerships, the initiative is reshaping perceptions around motor protection.
As Uganda’s roads become increasingly busy, Protecta Bode ensures that more drivers travel with confidence, security, and peace of mind, helping to build safer roads and stronger communities nationwide.
