Africa-Press – Uganda. Fresh graduates have been advised not to wait for government jobs but instead consider entrepreneurship to fight the problem of unemployment.
The Minister for tourism, Mr Tom Butiime said graduates need to be patient while looking for jobs.
“You will get jobs and if you fail to get jobs in government, consider employing yourself,” Minister Butiime said during the virtual graduation ceremony of Mountains of the Moon University (MMU) over the weekend.
Mr Butiime who is also the University’s Governing Council chairman said government is in the final stages of transitioning the university to become a public university.
“After swearing, I talked to permanent secretary ministry of education and we agreed that we shall not wait but to look for a supplementary budget for the university,’’ he disclosed.
‘‘I want to assure you we shall succeed and have a university become public,” Mr Butiime added.
The university authorities in May 2015 requested government to take over the university and shortly after, the minister of education and First lady Ms Janet Museveni established a transition task force to prepare for the takeover.
Government is expected to take over MMU in the Financial Year 2021/22.
At least 600 students graduated virtually at MMU’s 13th graduation ceremony with 18 of these getting first class degrees.
