The Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) has taken a significant step towards a more sustainable future with the inauguration of its first electric motorbike charging station at the Lubaga Division Office. This initiative, made possible through a collaboration with the European Union (EU) and local e-mobility company Zembo, marks a key milestone in the city’s smart city agenda and its commitment to reducing carbon emissions.
Leading the Way in Green Mobility
The launch of the charging station was officiated by Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago, highlighting the importance of this project in transitioning Kampala towards a greener and more sustainable future.
“We are dedicated to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and we are grateful to Zembo for introducing electric motorcycles in the city,” Lukwago expressed his appreciation at the ceremony.
This partnership with Zembo has already resulted in over 20 charging points established across the city and more than 300 electric motorcycles in operation. This represents a substantial leap forward in promoting sustainable urban mobility by reducing reliance on fossil fuels and minimizing environmental pollution.Collaborative Efforts for a Greener Future
Lennart Derrider, Head of Inclusive Green Economy, emphasized the collective commitment to fostering green mobility solutions during the launch event.
“This initiative, supported by EU funding and in partnership with Zembo, demonstrates the collective commitment to fostering green mobility solutions,” Derrider stated.
Edson Masereka, the PIFUD project coordinator, echoed these sentiments by highlighting the importance of transitioning motorcycles to green energy alternatives.
“We aim to see the majority of boda bodas transition to electric motorcycles, thus contributing to a cleaner and healthier urban environment,” Masereka affirmed.
