Male students killed at girls’ school laid to rest

Africa-PressUganda. The two students of St Joseph College Layibi who were killed last week at Bright Valley School, a girls’ school, have been laid to rest.

Brian Rubangakene, 19, was buried at Kalaga village, Koch-Goma Sub County while Emmanuel Okeny, 17, was buried at Agweng-Todora Village in Anaka Sub County, all in Nwoya District. The deceased were all senior four candidates.

While at the burial, Layibi College School administrators and local leaders called upon the government to bring to book those who killed their students.

On a fateful day, 10 students from St Joseph College Layibi escaped from the school premises in the night and went to the neighbouring Bright Valley Girls’ School, where three students were shot by the guards attached to Expose Security group.

It’s not yet clear what the students had gone to do at the neighbouring school at night.

Rubangakene died on the spot, Okeny escaped with injuries, went back to school where he was later found on Thursday morning, he was taken to Gulu Regional Referral Hospital where he breathed his last.

Their colleague Kenneth Rubangakene is still at St Mary’s Hospital Lacor receiving treatment, while seven others who had earlier been arrested by police were given police bonds and dismissed from school.

While at the burial, the senior four classroom teacher at St Joseph’s College Layibi, Mr Geoffrey Okot Ojok, tasked the government and other stakeholders to make sure that those who killed the students are brought to the book.

“Why shoot to kill yet there are other body parts like legs that they should have shot rather than killing our children,” he asked.

The family head at Rubangaken’s home, Mr Damiano Okot called on the family to seek the grace of God at this trying moment.

The LCIII Chairperson Koch-Goma Sub County, Mr John Bosco Okullu, said it hurts looking at how the parents of the two have been struggling to see their children get through education.

“Many parents get into loans so that their children can attain education. We want justice to prevail and guns should not be the best weapon to be used in resolving any conflicts,” he said

The Leader of Opposition who is also the Gulu District Woman Member Of Parliament, Ms Betty Aol Ocan, advised school administrators to revisit means of protecting children while in schools.

“We now have peace in our region, so I see no need for having guns in schools. Canes can instead be applied in disciplining unruly learners,” she said.
