Independent presidential candidate Lt. Gen Henry Tumukunde has asked voters in Bugisu sub-region to help him bring an end to President Yoweri Museveni’s 35-year rule in Uganda come 2021 general elections.
“Let Bugisu use its 1.6 million votes to bring about change of leadership in Uganda for better development opportunities in areas like tourism,” Tumukunde who addressed the rally for less than 45 minutes appealed.Tumukunde has told the people of Mbale City that the years he has closely worked with Museveni, he (Tumukunde) has never heard him (Museveni) mention when he would leave state power to another leader.Addressing a rally at Mbale Cricket Ground on Tuesday, Tumukunde who spoke for less than 30 minutes said the people of Mbale should expect better things from his government if elected to lead the country.Tumukunde who first asked the crowd to observe COVID-19 Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) at the rally, spoke against the resettlement of landslide-hit families from Bududa district to Kiryandongo arguing that government would emulate what the government of Switzerland did for its people who live in the hilly areas. He said if elected his government would ensure that Bamasaaba farmers benefit from the Arabica coffee which he described as one of the best brands in the world adding that unfortunately, the coffee dealers in and outside the country have been diluting it with other brands.Tumukunde challenged the young people who constitute the biggest percentage of Uganda’s population to think of engaging in other economic development activities instead of only focusing on boda boda transport services.Tumukunde arrived at the venue of the rally through the centre of Mbale City escorted by a convoy of boda boda riders and a blaring public address system as he waved to the people through his open roof vehicle without any incident of teargas canisters.
