Second Fire Outbreak in a Week Destroys 12 Homes in Nabilatuk

Africa-Press – Uganda. A fire outbreak in Lokwamoru Village, Narisae Parish, Lorengedwat Sub-county, Nabilatuk District, has destroyed 12 houses, leaving families grappling with significant losses.

This is the second fire incident reported in the sub-county within a week.

Karamoja Police Spokesperson Mike Longole confirmed the incident, stating that no human casualties were recorded, but property worth millions was lost.

“We are yet to establish the cause of the fire, but it is concerning that wildfires are becoming increasingly common during this dry season,” Longole said.

Just last week, a similar fire in Lonangat Village, also in Lorengedwat Sub-county, rendered hundreds homeless.

That fire was traced to young boys attempting to hunt wild rats for food, an activity that triggered an uncontrollable blaze fueled by dry vegetation and strong winds.

Police have urged residents to adopt preventive measures to reduce the risk of wildfires.

“We advise villagers to clear dry grass around their manyattas, monitor children’s activities closely, and discourage them from setting fires for hunting. Leaving homes unattended further increases vulnerability,” Longole cautioned.

To bolster fire response efforts, emergency teams have been stationed in Moroto, operating 24/7.

Residents are encouraged to report fire outbreaks by calling the emergency hotline at 0776478871. “Feel free to contact us for rescue services at any time,” Longole assured.

The repeated fire incidents have highlighted the need for heightened community awareness and stricter enforcement of safety measures.

Local leaders are calling for increased vigilance and public education to protect lives and property from future disasters.
