The Uganda Tourism Board (UTB) has announced the appointment of its outgoing Chief Executive Lilly Ajarova as the Senior Presidential Advisor on Tourism.
Ms Ajarova, 48, has been a pivotal figure in Uganda’s tourism sector, having served as UTB’s CEO since 2018.
A graduate of Makerere University and an experienced professional with a background in tourism development and management, she has dedicated her career to promoting Uganda as a top-tier global tourism destination.
The UTB, established in 1994, is responsible for promoting Uganda as a prime tourist destination, ensuring quality in tourism facilities, and driving investments in the sector.
As Ms Ajarova transitions from UTB’s leadership, her appointment to this senior advisory role reflects the immense contributions she has made to Uganda’s tourism industry.
In her new capacity, Ms Ajarova will advise the President on strategic tourism policies and initiatives to ensure that the sector’s growth is closely aligned with the nation’s development agenda.
Her role will also focus on enhancing Uganda’s global competitiveness, promoting diversified tourism offerings, and fostering international collaborations to benefit the sector.
“I am excited about this new chapter in my journey and look forward to working closely with all stakeholders to further strengthen tourism as a key driver of Uganda’s economic growth,” Ms Ajarova said.
“This role presents an opportunity to align Uganda’s tourism sector with the government’s target of achieving tenfold economic growth.”
Under Ms Ajarova’s leadership at UTB, the “Explore Uganda” destination brand was launched, helping to position Uganda as an attractive global tourism hub.
She also played a pivotal role in enhancing service quality in tourism establishments, boosting MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) tourism, and establishing partnerships with key stakeholders and development partners.
Her contributions led UTB to be recognized as the third-best performing government agency in 2022, earning an Excellence Service Award.
“I am deeply honored by the trust placed in me by His Excellency the President,” Ms Ajarova added.
“Tourism is a cornerstone of our national economy, and I am committed to ensuring that our sector continues to be competitive on the global stage, attracting investment and creating sustainable opportunities for all Ugandans.”
