Ibanda RDC Orders Immediate Eviction of Wetland Encroachers

Africa-Press – Uganda. Ibanda District Resident Commissioner (RDC), Mr. Godfrey Mbetegyereize, has directed the Ibanda Municipal Council Environment Officer, Mr. Robert Tumwesigye, to take immediate action against individuals who have illegally filled Kirimirire Wetland with soil.

During a visit to the wetland along the Ibanda-Mbarara highway on Friday, RDC Mbetegyereize discovered that a man identified as Muzamiru, along with an unidentified individual, had dumped soil in the swamp, covering an area spanning four plots.

Expressing concern over the continued destruction of wetlands, Mbetegyereize emphasized that encroachment on wetlands and forests is a major contributor to climate change and its adverse effects.

“All people encroaching on wetlands and forests are directly fueling climate change and its negative impacts. We must take action to protect our environment before it’s too late,” he stated.

In response, the Ibanda Municipal Council Environment Officer, Mr. Robert Tumwesigye, vowed to take strict measures against the encroachers.

“We are going to write to those who have illegally occupied the wetland and ensure that they are evicted,” Tumwesigye affirmed.

The move is part of the government’s broader efforts to protect the environment and mitigate climate change, reinforcing the commitment to conserving wetlands, which play a crucial role in water purification, flood control, and biodiversity conservation.

Local authorities have urged residents to respect environmental laws and seek legal guidance before engaging in land development activities to avoid conflicts with conservation regulations.
