Africa-Press – Uganda. The construction works on the 15.6 km Mpigi-Muduuma road in Mpigi district are scheduled to kick off on April, 2025, the state minister for Greater Kampala, Kabuye Kyofatogabye has revealed.
The road is set to be upgraded to standard, with a contract awarded to Zhongmei Engineering Company Ltd under the shs2.1 trillion Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area Urban Development Program (GKMA-UDP) funded by the World Bank.
Speaking on Wednesday while inspecting works, Minister Kyofatogabye said currently, 98% of the way where the road will pass has been acquired, noting that the construction works will be completed in August 2026.
“I am very grateful to the district for ensuring 98% of the way is now secured. We hope by April, 25 we will be able to flag off the construction works as other things like alignment, drainage and others are also worked on,” Kyofatogabye said.
He said they are looking at ensuring closed drainage, instead of open drainage in the part of Mpigi town council where the road passes since it is heavily settled.
The minister also pointed out other areas like provision of walkways in the town council that need to be worked upon.
“By and large, the contractor, consultant and everyone is ready to have the construction works kick off. We shall support them. Even in the next financial year, we ae designing more roads. The entire plan was for 610km for the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area Urban Development Program and the first phase is to construct 331km,” he said.
He emphasized that the project is aimed at connectivity, mobility and increase business tractions among the beneficiary districts and town councils in the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area.
“That why we are opening strategic roads in these areas. For example when coming from Mityana to Mpigi, you don’t need to come all the way to Busega, you just turn at Muduuma. These are the earlier plans we thought about.”
The minister however raised concern about one of the local council chairmen who mobilized locals to refuse to give way for the road.
He said they would persuade him to allow the development but in case this fails, the minister said they would use “revolutionary” methods on him.
The $566 million (Shs2.1 trillion) Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area Urban Development Programme (GKMA-UDP) is funded by the World Bank Group.
The beneficiaries include KCCA, Entebbe, Kira, Makindye-Ssabagabo, Mukono and Nansana municipalities as well as Mukono, Mpigi and Wakiso district local governments.
The program will be financed through a $566 million (Shs2.1 trillion) from the International Development Association (IDA) of the World Bank Group.
