Africa-Press – Uganda. When I heard the news of Pope Francis’s passing, my heart grew heavy. Not just for the Catholics, but as someone who had the rare chance to witness his presence up close. At Next Media, our NBS TV brand was blessed to be part of something very special. We were the official broadcaster for his historic visit to Uganda in 2015. That moment left a huge mark on us that has never faded.
At the time, we were still growing. Ambitious, and driven, but still proving ourselves. When the call went out from the government asking for broadcasters to cover the Pope’s visit, we knew we had to give it our best. We were up against bigger players like Azam TV from Tanzania and another South African company. So, when NBS TV was chosen, it was not only an achievement but also a defining moment.
From then on, we knew we had work to do. We pulled together, planned every detail, and faced every challenge that came our way. Security was intense, coordination was demanding, and the rain! Oh, that rain! It fell nonstop for nearly three days and nights. But our people, who I am eternally grateful for, simply kept going. We had a purpose that was bigger than all of us.
Then he came.
I shall always remember the picture of Pope Francis getting off that aircraft. He was composed, and modest, carrying his familiar simple bag, and smiling broadly as he greeted everyone. No pomp, no drama. A straightforward man with warmth and grace. Experiencing what real leadership looks like that up close was priceless.
Even in death, he stayed true to his values. It’s said that he had willed to cover his burial costs! One final, quiet act of humility that summed up the way he lived.
Our team performed well despite the pressure and rain. We ensured that the entire nation and the world witnessed the story unfold clearly and superbly, from the airport to the Mass at Namugongo. Our feed was picked up by international broadcasters. Some even questioned thereafter whether we were going to the Central African Republic with him. We knew we were doing something right when we received that kind of acknowledgment.
Above all else, though, I recall how that particular moment united our team. It molded and tested us. It inspired us to keep moving forward by demonstrating our abilities. For what is now Next Media, that visit is a key milestone. It began a whole new chapter.
Allow me to thank Pope Francis as we grieve for him. I appreciate how your kindness and humility have inspired people all over the world. We appreciate your visit, which had a profound effect on Uganda and all of us at Next Media. And we appreciate you reminding us that the most powerful leaders are often the simplest of souls.
Paapa Francis, may you rest in peace. You were the people’s Pope.
