Africa-Press – Uganda. Uganda Development Bank (UDB) has clinched the coveted Regional Bank of the Year for East Africa title at the 18th African Banker Awards, a recognition of its trailblazing role in advancing inclusive and sustainable development financing.

The annual African Banker Awards celebrate excellence and innovation in Africa’s financial sector. This year’s ceremony, held in Nairobi, highlighted the pivotal role played by Development Finance Institutions (DFIs), with UDB standing out for its progressive approach to banking.

UDB was lauded for its strategic focus on development-oriented lending, socio-economic empowerment, and green finance, positioning itself as a catalyst for Uganda’s transformation.

The bank’s ability to navigate complex challenges while delivering impactful results has made it a benchmark institution among African DFIs.

“We are honoured to receive this coveted award, particularly considering the high-caliber recipients who have received it in the past,” said Patricia Ojangole, Managing Director of UDB.

“Being named Regional Bank of the Year for East Africa is a testament to our hard work, dedication, and resolve to accelerate financial inclusion and facilitate Uganda’s socio-economic transformation.”

In addition to its win at the African Banker Awards, UDB earned a Silver Award (A+ rating) from the Association of African Development Finance Institutions (AADFI).

This distinction followed a rigorous peer review based on the Performance Standards for Green and Inclusive Recovery-oriented Services (PSGRS).

The AADFI assessment evaluated institutions across core areas including governance, risk management, financial performance, and development impact. UDB’s strong showing reflects its operational excellence and commitment to institutional sustainability.

Recognised as one of Africa’s leading development banks, UDB has adopted a holistic sustainability model, aligning its operations with global best practices.

From climate-conscious lending to SME support and infrastructure finance, the bank continues to play a central role in Uganda’s journey toward a more resilient and inclusive economy.

This year’s awards ceremony attracted a diverse mix of industry leaders, policymakers, and stakeholders from across the continent, reaffirming the vital contribution of home-grown financial institutions in shaping Africa’s development trajectory.
