Africa-Press – Uganda. Incumbent Member of Parliament Nsegumire Muhammad Kibedi has retained the National Resistance Movement (NRM) flag for Mityana North Constituency after decisively defeating former State Minister for Tourism and current NRM Vice Chairperson for Buganda, Godfrey Kiwanda.
Kibedi secured 16,514 votes, representing 70% of the total vote, while Kiwanda trailed with 7,046 votes (30%), according to official results from the NRM Electoral Commission.
The primary election in Mityana North was marked by an unusually high voter turnout and peaceful conduct, setting it apart from previous elections in the constituency, which have often been tainted by violence, delays, and allegations of malpractice.
While other areas in Mityana District reported relatively low turnout, Mityana North saw long queues forming at polling stations as early as 10am, with residents turning out in large numbers to cast their votes.
Observers and party officials praised the process as one of the most orderly and transparent primaries ever conducted in the area.
Security was visibly present but non-intrusive, and no major incidents were reported throughout the day.
Following the announcement of results, Kibedi expressed gratitude to his supporters and pledged to continue representing their interests with diligence and integrity.
“This is a victory for the people of Mityana North. I pledge to remain your voice and work for unity and development,” Kibedi said.
His victory underscores a broader trend in grassroots politics where incumbents with strong community ties continue to outperform nationally prominent figures.
Despite Kiwanda’s high-profile status within the ruling party, Kibedi’s sustained presence on the ground and connection with local voters proved decisive.
With the NRM flag now in hand, Kibedi advances to the 2026 general elections as the party’s candidate for Mityana North—a constituency that remains a critical political battleground in central Uganda.
