Africa-Press – Uganda. The National Resistance Movement (NRM) party primaries in Kawempe North constituency kicked off Thursday morning with a notably low voter turnout, especially in the early hours, and delayed arrival of electoral officials.
Although voting was scheduled to officially commence at 10:00 AM, some polling stations such as Ketifalawo village recorded minimal presence of voters by 9:00 AM.
However the same time, Electoral Commission (EC) officials had not yet arrived at several stations, further delaying preparations.
According to the party’s electoral guidelines, the exercise was expected to begin with the verification of registered party members, followed by lining up behind preferred candidates by midday.
The contest for the party flag bearer in Kawempe North has attracted two candidates—Faridah Nambi and Sofia Karadi—who are vying for support across 47 villages in the nine parishes that make up the constituency under the NRM structure.
Security presence was visibly heightened across the constituency.
Police officers were seen patrolling and manning areas around polling stations to ensure a peaceful voting process. Some officers were stationed just outside polling centres as a preventive measure against potential disruptions.
