Lugazi Diocese Unveils Namugongo 2025 Pilgrimage Plans

Africa-Press – Uganda. The Lugazi Catholic Diocese has unveiled its comprehensive plans for leading the 2025 Uganda Martyrs Day pilgrimage to Namugongo, marking the first time in 22 years the diocese takes on this national responsibility.

At a press conference held at Mary Queen of Peace Cathedral in Lugazi, Vicar General Monsignor Richard Kayondo outlined key preparations, emphasizing mandatory registration for all pilgrims through their respective dioceses.

“This year, we want every pilgrim accounted for before they travel,” Kayondo stated. “It’s about safety, support, and spiritual readiness—not politics.”

The registration data will also assist the National Planning Authority in tracking annual pilgrimage figures. A 500-member diocesan choir, drawn from all 34 parishes, will lead the liturgy with sacred music during the celebrations on June 3.

In addition to the main foot pilgrimage from Lugazi to Namugongo starting June 1, the diocese has announced a special Walk of Faith from Munyonyo to St. Matiya Mulumba Church in Old Kampala on May 31, especially targeting youth.

“It’s more than just a physical walk. It’s a journey of faith and remembrance,” Kayondo said.

With 50% of the required budget already secured, the diocese continues to appeal to well-wishers and donors to fulfill their pledges. Security and coordination along the Kampala–Jinja Highway will be managed in partnership with Uganda Police and UPDF.

Established in 1997, Lugazi Diocese covers Mukono, Buikwe, Kayunga, and the Buvuma Islands and pays tribute to its own Uganda Martyrs—Ponsiano Ngondwe and Mukasa Kiriwawanvu.

“This is a sacred responsibility,” Kayondo said. “We want this pilgrimage to reflect the faith, discipline, and humility of the Uganda Martyrs.”
