Africa-Press – Uganda. Ten supporters of the National Unity Platform (NUP) were Thursday remanded to Lira Prison over the incident in which a surveillance police vehicle was allegedly attacked in Lira City on Monday.
The accused face charges of malicious damage to property and robbery involving a Uganda Police Force vehicle.
The state told Senior Principal Magistrate Jane Tibagonzeka that on October 28, 2025, at around 1pm, the suspects allegedly intercepted and blocked a police vehicle along the Lira–Alebtong highway near Obot Primary School in Obot A Village, Bar Sub-county.
The group is accused of deflating all four tires of the police vehicle using sharp metallic objects before stealing a Dell laptop valued at Shs 1,892,000 and two 20-litre jerricans of diesel.
The ten suspects—Ismail Bukenya, Liberty Lokoro, Mastura Nakabuye, Raston Waiswa, Hope Nasozi, Saliman Kagwa, Reagan Kamulegeya, Stephen Katamba, Alison Lubega, and Precious Paul Ssembusi—denied all charges.
They are expected back in court on November 12, 2025, for a bail hearing.
Outside court, Hamza Otoo Amiza, NUP parliamentary aspirant for Oyam South Constituency, described the incident as political intimidation.
He called on party supporters to remain calm while the NUP legal team works to secure the suspects’ release and urged members to act as sureties for the detained individuals.
Several NUP officials, including Dorine Akello, the Lira City Party Administrator, attended the court session.
