It has been done,&#8221; Mr Macharia told the EastAfrican.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Uganda-Kenya Metre-gauge railway stalled<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>2020 was a year of mixed fortunes for railways in East Africa as plans to construct new standard gauge railways lines in Kenya and Uganda stalled, forcing railways to divert more of their resources to refurbishing\u00a0sections of their metre-gauge railways (MGR).<\/p>\n<p>Both countries unsuccessfully sought additional funding to complete the ambitious 1243km standard gauge railway (SGR) project to link Mombasa with Kampala.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_10528\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10528\" style=\"width: 693px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-10528\" src=\"https:\/\/static.africa-press.net\/uganda\/sites\/34\/2021\/05\/28-300x201.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"693\" height=\"464\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.africa-press.net\/uganda\/sites\/34\/2021\/05\/28-300x201.jpg 300w, https:\/\/static.africa-press.net\/uganda\/sites\/34\/2021\/05\/28-1024x685.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/static.africa-press.net\/uganda\/sites\/34\/2021\/05\/28-768x513.jpg 768w, https:\/\/static.africa-press.net\/uganda\/sites\/34\/2021\/05\/28.jpg 1086w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 693px) 100vw, 693px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-10528\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kenya\u2019s Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) project has faced a number of setbacks.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Unfortunately, Kenya failed\u00a0to obtain funding for the remaining two phases of the SGR network, the 262km phase 2B between Naivasha and Kisumu and the 107km phase 2C linking Kisumu and Malaba on the Kenya-Uganda border.<\/p>\n<p>Uganda government in June 2020 approved $US 376m to refurbish the 215km Malaba-Kampala MGR line, $US 12m to purchase locomotives and additional $US 2.5m was approved for repairs to the MGR network.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Renewed Vibrancy\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This new vibrancy reflects the two countries&#8217; urgency to access and dominate markets beyond their borders after years of failure to build a Northern Corridor standard gauge railway for Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda and South Sudan.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-10532\" src=\"https:\/\/static.africa-press.net\/uganda\/sites\/34\/2021\/05\/31-300x223.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"689\" height=\"512\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.africa-press.net\/uganda\/sites\/34\/2021\/05\/31-300x223.jpg 300w, https:\/\/static.africa-press.net\/uganda\/sites\/34\/2021\/05\/31-1024x761.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/static.africa-press.net\/uganda\/sites\/34\/2021\/05\/31-768x571.jpg 768w, https:\/\/static.africa-press.net\/uganda\/sites\/34\/2021\/05\/31-80x60.jpg 80w, https:\/\/static.africa-press.net\/uganda\/sites\/34\/2021\/05\/31.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 689px) 100vw, 689px\" \/><br \/>\nAccording\u00a0to The EastAfrican, Kenya which is revamping its metre gauge railway line from Naivasha to Malaba, wants a reliable mode of transport\u00a0for onward transit of cargo into the hinterland to make its logistics infrastructure operational, particularly the Naivasha inland container depot. Besides that, Kenya is also targeting the $92.3 million Congolese market for its manufactured goods.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand the Uganda\u00a0Railways Corporation managing director Stanley Sendegeya revealed that Uganda is targeting to move cargo from road to rail in order to cut costs. &#8220;Our target is to move cargo from road to rail, and we expect to be moving 6 million tonnes a year. And once we do this,rail project the costs will com down,&#8221; said Sendegeya. Without investors, there will be no jobs for our youth&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Mr John Ndagaano, who works in Uganda Railways Corporation told Africa Press that the rehabilitation of Uganda-Kenya old meter gauge railway will economically benefit\u00a0 Ugandans most especially those who are exporting and importing goods, because it will be cheaper, as well as creating jobs and cutting journey time.<\/p>\n<p>The project will also make it easier for the passengers to travel between destinations.
