Africa-Press – Uganda. <\/strong><\/span>Commonly referred to as both the food basket of West Nile and the cradle of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) in the region, Vurra County in Arua District is emerging as one of the constituencies to watch in the 2026 general elections.<\/b><\/p>\n

At parliamentary level, 24-year-old NRM flagbearer Charity Lenia has made a bold entrance after defeating seven male competitors in the party primaries.<\/p>\n

She says her campaign is focused on empowering local farmers to increase their harvests and improve household incomes.<\/p>\n

However, Lenia faces stiff competition from seasoned politicians \u2014 Democratic Party (DP) aspirant Gerald Obini, Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) candidate John Anguyo, and the incumbent Yovan Adriko, who is expected to return as an independent candidate.<\/p>\n

Lenia\u2019s victory in the NRM primaries has already drawn national attention.<\/p>\n

\u201cWithout competition, then we are not practicing democracy,\u201d she said after her win.<\/p>\n

Her youth and determination have made her a fast-rising figure in West Nile politics.<\/p>\n

DP\u2019s Gerald Obini, one of her main challengers, acknowledged the growing rivalry.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes, there is competition between me and Lenia,\u201d he said, describing her as his major opponent in the upcoming polls.<\/p>\n

\u201cLenia has taken the position of Yovan Adriko, who is about to exit, but people will decide.\u201d<\/p>\n

Vurra County\u2019s political landscape is unique. Beyond its rich agricultural output, the area is a traditional NRM bastion and holds symbolic weight for the ruling party\u2019s legacy in West Nile.<\/p>\n

In outlining her priorities, Lenia says she will focus on empowering local farmers, strengthening the health and education systems, and supporting business communities to take advantage of cross-border trade with the Democratic Republic of Congo.<\/p>\n

Analysts note that the proximity of Vurra County to Arua City gives it additional strategic importance.<\/p>\n

Regional power brokers such as NRM\u2019s Hajjat Medina Ojale, Arua District Woman MP Lillian Paparu, and State Minister Evelyn Anite are expected to influence how the NRM performs there.<\/p>\n

Minister Anite, who has previously voiced support for party members running as independents after controversial primaries, also has business interests in Vurra.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere were challenges in the NRM primary elections, and they have a right to express themselves, especially when those challenges have not been addressed,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

With both political veterans and youthful contenders in the mix, the battle for Vurra County promises to be one of the most closely watched races in the 2026 polls.<\/p>\n
