Africa-Press – Uganda. <\/strong> <\/span>The Katikkiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga, and his Busoga counterpart, Dr. Joseph Muvawala, have called on schools across Uganda to shift from exam-focused teaching to a competence-based approach that equips learners with practical skills, critical thinking, and problem-solving abilities.<\/b><\/p>\n

The remarks were made in Jinja City during celebrations marking the 10th anniversary of Viva College, where Mayiga presided as chief guest.<\/p>\n

Upon arrival, Mayiga was received by the school administration and taken on a guided tour of the institution\u2019s innovation spaces, which he formally commissioned.<\/p>\n

The tour showcased student-led projects emphasizing creativity, hands-on learning, and applied problem-solving\u2014qualities the leaders highlighted as essential in modern education.<\/p>\n

Accompanied by Dr. Muvawala, the leaders engaged with learners and staff before joining other dignitaries for the main function.<\/p>\n

In his address, Mayiga stressed the need to reorient Uganda\u2019s education system towards producing well-rounded individuals capable of applying knowledge in real-life situations.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe must move away from an education system that prioritizes grades over competence. What matters is producing individuals who can think critically, innovate, and solve problems in society,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Dr. Muvawala echoed similar sentiments, warning that overemphasis on examination performance undermines holistic development.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have seen students celebrated for excelling in national exams, but excellent grades alone are not enough. We need a holistic approach that shapes capable and competent individuals for the future,\u201d he noted.<\/p>\n

He also highlighted Uganda\u2019s strong innovative potential, emphasizing that while many ideas are generated, few survive due to lack of practical nurturing.<\/p>\n

\u201cUganda is one of the most innovative countries, but many ideas die prematurely. Today, we celebrate the survival of a good idea at this institution,\u201d Dr. Muvawala added.<\/p>\n

The Busoga Katukiro shared a personal testimony, revealing that some of his children had studied at VIVA College, crediting the school with positively shaping their discipline and outlook.<\/p>\n

The leaders praised the school\u2019s proprietor, Hajj Juma Kisaame, and his wife for their dedication to nurturing talent and investing in practical education. District Education Officer Eria Kisambira lauded the institution for its decade-long contribution to education.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis school has been pivotal in nurturing children since its inception 10 years ago. It exemplifies what practical, competence-based education should look like,\u201d Kisambira said.<\/p>\n

The anniversary celebrations were attended by senior judicial officers, legislators, and the Commissioner General of the Uganda Revenue Authority, John Musinguzi, among other dignitaries.<\/p>\n
