Africa-Press – Uganda. <\/strong> <\/span>In a decisive effort to tackle youth unemployment and close the regional skills gap, BrighterMonday Uganda, in partnership with the Mastercard Foundation, hosted its inaugural Gulu Career Fair.<\/b><\/p>\n

Held under the theme Matching Ambition with Opportunity, the landmark event brought together more than 1,000 ambitious young people and 59 employers, transforming the venue into a dynamic hub for recruitment, networking, and professional growth.<\/p>\n

The fair came at a pivotal moment for Uganda\u2019s labor market, which is rapidly transitioning toward a skills-first economy.<\/p>\n

Insights shared during the event revealed that while Northern Uganda has a growing and capable talent pool, a significant information gap persists between job seekers and the evolving expectations of modern employers.<\/p>\n

Notably, nearly 65 percent of employers now prioritize soft skills\u2014such as emotional intelligence, adaptability, and communication\u2014over traditional academic credentials alone. By bringing the event to Gulu, BrighterMonday is actively decentralizing access to opportunity, ensuring that geography no longer limits career progression.<\/p>\n

The event drew strong support from local government and academic leaders, including the Dean of Students and the Deputy Vice Chancellor, who emphasized the importance of bridging classroom learning with real-world employment.<\/p>\n

In her opening remarks, LC3 Vice Chairperson Vickie Atim urged young people to take skilling seriously, describing practical expertise as the most reliable currency in today\u2019s competitive job market.<\/p>\n

This message was reinforced by keynote speaker Walter Ojok , Founder of House of Ojok, who encouraged participants to begin with the resources already available to them. He highlighted that success often emerges when preparation meets opportunity, urging attendees to position themselves to seize the right moment.<\/p>\n

A standout feature of the fair was its real-time job matching approach, which moved beyond traditional networking formats. Employers conducted live interviews on-site rather than simply collecting CVs, creating immediate opportunities for engagement.<\/p>\n

This high-impact model resulted in several participants securing job offers on the spot, significantly shortening the typical hiring cycle and demonstrating the power of direct interaction. For employers, it also provided a more holistic view of candidates, allowing them to assess personality, drive, and communication skills beyond what is captured on paper.<\/p>\n

Innovation played a key role in the event through the introduction of an AI Career Assistant. This tool was showcased during a dedicated demo session, offering participants practical guidance on optimizing their CVs for applicant tracking systems, preparing for interviews, and navigating salary negotiations.<\/p>\n

By integrating artificial intelligence into the job search process, BrighterMonday is equipping young people with a digital co-pilot to make their career journeys more strategic, efficient, and informed.<\/p>\n

At the core of the initiative is the Gen-Kazi (Generation Kazi) Programme, a collaboration between BrighterMonday Uganda and the Mastercard Foundation.<\/p>\n

The programme is designed to support young people in securing dignified and meaningful work by focusing on skills development and intentional career preparation.<\/p>\n

Through Gen-Kazi, BrighterMonday is evolving from a job listing platform into a long-term career partner, equipping youth with the power skills needed to thrive in a competitive and ever-changing job market.<\/p>\n

By empowering young people in Gulu with both practical skills and access to opportunity, the career fair marks a significant step toward aligning ambition with sustainable employment pathways.<\/p>\n
