{"id":121700,"date":"2026-04-06T09:17:34","date_gmt":"2026-04-06T09:17:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/uganda\/all-news\/bishop-zziwa-calls-for-rule-of-law-and-pardon"},"modified":"2026-04-06T10:36:06","modified_gmt":"2026-04-06T10:36:06","slug":"bishop-zziwa-calls-for-rule-of-law-and-pardon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/uganda\/all-news\/bishop-zziwa-calls-for-rule-of-law-and-pardon","title":{"rendered":"Bishop Zziwa Calls for Rule of Law and Pardon"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"ap-article-header-tag\"> <strong>Africa-Press &#8211; Uganda. <\/strong> <\/span><b>The Chairperson of the Uganda Episcopal Conference, Bishop Anthony Joseph Zziwa, has called on the government to uphold the rule of law and consider granting pardon to political prisoners detained during the recently concluded general elections.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Delivering his Easter message to journalists at the Episcopal headquarters in Nsambya, Bishop Zziwa underscored the urgent need for justice, reconciliation, and national unity, particularly in the aftermath of a politically charged period.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe call upon the government to respect the rule of law and to consider granting pardon to those who were detained during the election period,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The bishop used the occasion to congratulate Christians upon reaching the Easter season, urging them to reflect deeply on the sacrifice of Jesus Christ and embrace personal transformation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEaster reminds us of Christ\u2019s sacrifice for humanity, and it challenges each one of us to become better, more compassionate people,\u201d he noted.<\/p>\n<p>He described Easter as a sacred period that should inspire believers to strengthen acts of kindness, solidarity, and communal harmony.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a special time for Christians to deepen acts of kindness and to walk together in unity and love,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>However, Bishop Zziwa expressed concern that this year\u2019s Easter is being marked amid growing divisions within society, largely fueled by political tensions and self-interest, which he said have contributed to inhumane actions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are celebrating Easter at a time when divisions are growing among people, driven by selfish interests and politics, leading to inhumane actions,\u201d he observed.<\/p>\n<p>He urged Ugandans to use the Easter period as an opportunity to reconcile with one another, forgive past grievances, and actively promote peace in their communities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet this be a time of reconciliation, forgiveness, and promoting peace so that we can truly live the meaning of Easter,\u201d he emphasized.<\/p>\n<p>Addressing the plight of individuals arrested in connection with the elections, Bishop Zziwa appealed to authorities to review their cases thoroughly and ensure that justice is administered fairly and transparently.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe appeal to the authorities to review these cases and ensure that justice is done with fairness and truth,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He further stressed the importance of dialogue in resolving national challenges, calling on leaders at all levels to prioritize truth and inclusivity in governance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLeaders must prioritize truth and promote dialogue so that our people can live in harmony,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Bishop Zziwa also revealed that during a recent meeting with Pope Leo XIV, the pontiff commended the steady growth and resilience of the Catholic Church in Uganda, encouraging continued faith and service among believers.<\/p>\n<p>The Easter message comes at a critical time as the country reflects on its socio-political landscape, with religious leaders increasingly playing a central role in advocating for peace, justice, and national cohesion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ap-article-footer-note\">Find more news and analyses on <span class=\"ap-highlight-country\">Uganda<\/span> on the <span class=\"ap-highlight-brand\">Africa Press<\/span> website<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Africa-Press &#8211; Uganda.
