Africa-Press – Uganda. <\/strong><\/span>As Makerere University undertakes the important process of selecting and vetting candidates for the position of Deputy Vice Chancellor (Finance & Administration), it is imperative that this exercise reflects the highest standards of transparency, fairness, and institutional integrity.<\/b><\/p>\n

Makerere is not just a university; it is a national symbol of academic excellence whose governance processes must inspire confidence among students, alumni, staff, and the wider public. Any leadership selection process within such an institution must therefore be above reproach, both in practice and in perception.<\/p>\n

Recent developments and conversations within stakeholder circles have raised concerns about the need to safeguard the independence and credibility of the structures entrusted with this responsibility, particularly the Senate Search Committee.<\/p>\n

While institutions often operate under pressure and competing interests, it is critical that this committee safeguards the credibility of Makerere University against all forms of \u201cfollowing orders from above.\u201d At such a critical juncture, even the slightest perception of undue influence, procedural deviation, or compromised independence risks casting a long shadow over the outcome.<\/p>\n

It is encouraging to note that the University Council has demonstrated commitment to due process by upholding procedural integrity at critical moments in this exercise. Such actions reaffirm confidence in the governance structures of the university and must be supported by all stakeholders.<\/p>\n

At this stage, what is required is not speculation or division, but vigilance and collective responsibility. Every member involved in this process must act independently, objectively, and in full adherence to the principles that underpin academic governance. Makerere\u2019s legacy demands nothing less.<\/p>\n

The forthcoming public presentations by candidates, scheduled to take place at the Main Building this Monday, March 30, 2026, at 11:00am, provide an important opportunity for transparency, engagement, and accountability. This moment should not be treated as routine; it is a defining step in shaping the future leadership of the institution.<\/p>\n

I therefore call upon the University Council, members of Senate, university management, the Convocation, staff, students, and all stakeholders to attend and actively participate in this process.<\/p>\n

Visibility and engagement are essential in reinforcing confidence and ensuring that the process remains open and credible.<\/p>\n

Ultimately, leadership selection at Makerere must not only be fair; it must be seen to be fair. The strength of Makerere University lies in its ability to uphold integrity even under pressure, because in the end, leadership is not only about who is appointed, but how they are appointed.<\/p>\n

This time, everyone is watching.<\/p>\n
