His close political and family ties to the party have made his inclusion on the State witness list appear, at first glance, contradictory.

However, in legal practice, being named a State witness does not automatically imply cooperation with prosecutors or betrayal of one’s political allies. In criminal proceedings, prosecutors often list individuals as factual witnesses because they were present during relevant events or possess information considered necessary for reconstructing timelines, locations, or activities under investigation.

In this case, investigators may be seeking clarification on meetings, gatherings, or activities that authorities have characterised as unlawful military drilling. Nyanzi could therefore be called to confirm attendance, describe events, or authenticate what occurred, rather than directly incriminate the accused.

Another possibility is that his name appears in material already gathered by investigators, including video footage, communication records, or prior statements. If so, prosecutors may require him to clarify or verify that evidence in court.

The case itself is closely linked to the February 2025 security crackdown on NUP activities. During that period, Nyanzi was reportedly abducted by armed men shortly after the Uganda People’s Defence Forces warned the party against what it described as “army-like parades” during Bobi Wine’s birthday events. Other party figures, including Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro, also reported evading arrest during the same operation.

Security forces later raided NUP offices and arrested several supporters over allegations related to unauthorised military-style drills. The current prosecution is widely understood to be connected to those events.

Nyanzi’s detention during that period may also be relevant to the case. If he was interrogated, any statements he made could form part of the prosecution’s evidence. However, such evidence could be challenged by the defence if it is shown to have been obtained under coercion or unlawful detention.

Beyond legal considerations, the naming of a high-profile opposition figure also carries political implications. It may be used to reinforce the State’s narrative around national security, or to signal the seriousness of the charges. However, it also risks strengthening perceptions that the case is politically driven, particularly if his testimony does not support the prosecution’s version of events.

Ultimately, Nyanzi’s inclusion on the witness list does not necessarily indicate alignment with the State. More likely, it reflects his proximity to the events under investigation, either as a participant, observer, or someone whose statements intersect with the evidence.

The key question now is not simply why he is listed, but what weight his testimony will carry in a politically sensitive case that sits at the intersection of law, opposition politics, and national security narratives.

For More News And Analysis About Uganda Follow Africa-Press

Africa-Press – Uganda.
