Africa-Press – Uganda. <\/strong> <\/span>Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni, aged 81, has taken the oath for a seventh consecutive term, a record, following his overwhelming victory in the disputed elections held in January. This extends his rule as one of the longest-serving leaders in Africa.<\/p>\n

Heavy security forces, including armored tanks, were deployed in the capital Kampala ahead of the inauguration ceremony, in measures that police stated were aimed at maintaining public order.<\/p>\n

Museveni told the crowds that his new term should be considered a period of “no rest for Ugandans.” He added that the people should focus on creating more wealth and job opportunities, building on the progress made over the past forty years through achieving peace and developing infrastructure.<\/p>\n

Museveni was declared the winner of the elections with over 70% of the votes, and his term is expected to end in 2031. His main opponent, pop star-turned-politician Bobi Wine, rejected the results, claiming that the elections were marred by “ballot box fraud.” Election officials denied these allegations.<\/p>\n

The 44-year-old opposition leader, whose real name is Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, fled the country after the elections, expressing fears that “the regime wants to get rid of him.” Museveni first came to power as a rebel leader in 1986 and has since won seven elections.<\/p>\n

He is among the few African leaders who have ruled for over 40 years, alongside Denis Sassou Nguesso of Congo-Brazzaville, Teodoro Obiang of Equatorial Guinea, and Paul Biya of Cameroon.<\/p>\n

The government declared a public holiday that day, and supporters of the president flocked to Kololo Independence Grounds in Kampala to attend the swearing-in ceremony. In his speech, Museveni stated that his government would use the anticipated oil production revenues to revitalize the economy and alleviate poverty. He added, “We must protect what has been achieved, correct what still needs improvement, and move forward together as one nation.”<\/p>\n

Among the African leaders who attended the ceremony were Tanzania’s President Samia Suluhu Hassan, Democratic Republic of Congo’s President Fe\u0301lix Tshisekedi, South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir, and Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud.<\/p>\n

Uganda is among the countries with the youngest populations in the world, where most of its citizens have never known a president other than Museveni. He has not announced a retirement date, but analysts suggest that this may be his last term. His son, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the 51-year-old army commander, is considered a strong candidate to succeed him.<\/p>\n

However, Kainerugaba faces increasing criticism for using social media to threaten the opposition, including Wine. Earlier this year, Kainerugaba threatened to castrate Wine in posts that were later deleted.<\/p>\n

Wine, leader of the National Unity Platform party, stated that the election results were “rigged” and urged Ugandans to defend their democracy. The government insisted that the elections were free and fair, accusing Museveni’s opponents of seeking to overturn the results through violence, labeling them as “terrorists.”<\/p>\n

Wine has gone into hiding following raids on his home, accusing security forces of targeting him and his family. The police denied these claims, asserting that they were only providing him protection as a presidential candidate.<\/p>\n

Museveni’s government continues to face criticism from human rights organizations due to a crackdown by security forces following the disputed elections.<\/p>\n

Last month, Amnesty International reported that at least 16 people were likely killed between January 15 and 18 by the army and police. Reports indicated that the victims were unarmed and posed no direct threat.<\/p>\n

The rights organization also criticized the treatment of prominent opposition politician Kizza Besigye, who remains in detention since late 2024 after being abducted during a visit to Kenya and forcibly returned to Uganda. He was later charged with possession of firearms and attempting to purchase weapons from abroad in a military court, charges he denies.<\/p>\n

Last week, the government passed the Sovereignty Law, which criminalizes actions deemed to promote “foreign interests at the expense of Uganda’s interests,” classifying recipients of foreign funding as “agents of foreign interests.”<\/p>\n
