Africa-Press<\/a> – Uganda<\/a>. <\/strong><\/span>The medical fraternity is in grief after losing two senior doctors to COVID-19 in a day.<\/b><\/p>\n

“Great sadness has again befallen us. In a space of less than 12 hours, we have lost two senior doctors – Dr Charles Kiggundu (pictured above) and Dr Fred Kigozi,” said Dr Richard Idro, the president of the Uganda Medical Association.<\/p>\n

He said Dr Kiggundu was a consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist and former President of the Association of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Uganda and a “real advocate for reproductive health and post-abortion care”.<\/p>\n

According to Dr Idro, until a few hours to his death, Dr Kiggundu was the consultant on duty at Kawempe Hospital. He said he died on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

“Before we could take a breath, news filtered of the death of Dr Kigozi, Senior Consultant Psychiatrist and former Director of Butabika hospital.”<\/p>\n

He said the medical profession was scared after learning that there were “other doctors battling COVID-19”.<\/p>\n

“There is real concern about the coming days following the Presidential and parliamentary campaigns, the Christmas and the New Year festivities,” he said. His concern is that beyond the care for all health workers, “we need to urgently discuss and come up with strategies of how to protect our senior doctors. For example, can we use them sparingly on-call duties?”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
