{"id":28963,"date":"2022-03-31T19:45:52","date_gmt":"2022-03-31T19:45:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/uganda\/all-news\/how-black-and-white-became-hollywoods-favourite-new-colour"},"modified":"2022-03-31T19:48:49","modified_gmt":"2022-03-31T19:48:49","slug":"how-black-and-white-became-hollywoods-favourite-new-colour","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/uganda\/all-news\/how-black-and-white-became-hollywoods-favourite-new-colour","title":{"rendered":"How black-and-white became Hollywood\u2019s favourite new colour"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Africa-Press &#8211; Uganda. <\/strong><\/span>Black-and-white is the hot new trend in Hollywood, where directors of Oscars-contending films such as Belfast and The Tragedy of Macbeth embrace monochrome for its storytelling power.<\/p>\n<p>Kenneth Branagh\u2019s childhood drama and Joel Coen\u2019s Shakespeare adaptation are among recent acclaimed movies shot either entirely or mainly without colour, as filmmakers seek to tap into the medium\u2019s inherent sense of historical authenticity and humanising intimacy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cColour allows you brilliantly to describe people, but black-and-white allows you to feel people,\u201d Branagh said of his deeply personal drama about violence in 1960s Northern Ireland, which is up for seven Oscars on Sunday, including best picture.<\/p>\n<p>While a \u201csweeping landscape of a desert or a mountain range\u201d can be made epic by colour, \u201can epic dimension of black-and-white photography is the human face on a massive screen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The choice \u201cmakes for a poetic dimension to things that can otherwise seem a little banal,\u201d he told AFP.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Tragedy of Macbeth cinematographer Bruno Delbonnel told The New York Times the effect was \u201cmeant to bring theatricality\u201d and give the film a timeless quality. Its star Denzel Washington is in the running for best actor.<\/p>\n<p>Monochrome movies have continued to exist since they fell out of mainstream favour during the 1950s when cheaper colour technology enabled more directors to emulate the bright tones that had dazzled audiences years earlier in The Wizard of Oz and Gone with the Wind.<\/p>\n<p>In 2012, The Artist \u2013 a film that was not just black-and-white but also silent \u2013 won best picture at the Oscars, while the likes of Roma and Mank have won Oscars for best cinematography more recently.<\/p>\n<p>But this year\u2019s colourless contingent has grown.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe all got together\u2026 it was a DGA [Directors Guild of America] meeting,\u201d joked Mike Mills, whose family drama C\u2019mon C\u2019mon starring Joaquin Phoenix, also comes in grayscale and was nominated at this month\u2019s BAFTAs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI love black-and-white. I\u2019m super pretentious. I watch many black-and-white films \u2013 they\u2019re my heroes\u2019 films, right? I just adore them,\u201d Mills told AFP.<\/p>\n<p>In Passing \u2013 whose star Ruth Negga has been nominated for a batch of awards, winning at the Film Independent Spirit Awards earlier this month \u2013 the format is used to tackle the issue of racism.<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca Hall\u2019s directorial debut explores \u201cracial passing,\u201d as two childhood friends of mixed racial heritage have a chance encounter in 1920s New York while both are pretending to be white.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt wasn\u2019t just a stylistic choice. I felt that it was a conceptual choice \u2013 to make a film about colourism\u2026 that drains the colour out of it,\u201d Hall said at its Sundance film festival premiere.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe look at faces, and then we immediately put them into these categorisations. The categorisations become important, but they are also, in some senses, absurd.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNobody is actually black-and-white. Film isn\u2019t black-and-white. It\u2019s gray.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So, why are directors getting on the black-and-white bandwagon now? Is it simply a coincidence?<\/p>\n<p>Experts have pointed to broader trends such as the rise of Instagram and social media, which may explain why audiences \u2013 which in recent times may have seen black-and-white films as \u201cold-fashioned\u201d or \u201cboring\u201d \u2013 are now more willing to give it a go.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMost Americans have become their filmmakers and photographers with the ability to slap a filter onto an image and render it in grayscale or sepia or heightened colour,\u201d wrote Alissa Wilkinson, who covers film and culture for Vox.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGetting used to seeing colour-adjusted images, including black-and-white videos and photos, could make us associate them with the past less. Instead of being bound by history and time, we start to see them as simply aesthetic choices.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Several of this year\u2019s efforts have embraced the idea that black-and-white is a choice to look less accurate than the colour-filled world deliberately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBlack-and-white is such a crazy abstraction, so does a great sort of magic trick on the viewer,\u201d said Mills. \u201c\u2018I\u2019m not in the real world anymore.
