Africa-Press – Uganda. <\/strong><\/span>Security at Makerere University has been tightened ahead of the 72nd graduation ceremony which commences this morning.<\/p>\n

The event is expected to be graced by President Museveni and the First Lady, Janet Museveni who doubles as the minister for Education and Sports.<\/p>\n

“If you don’t have any valid identity card, then use the main gate. We don’t allow anyone to enter the university here without an identification card,\u201d a police officer deployed at one of the small gates near Makerere Kavule was overheard telling people who wanted to access the university.<\/p>\n

By the time of filing this story, all routes leading to the Freedom Square where the event will be held were cordoned off and for anyone without a national ID or student ID was not allowed to access the university premises.<\/p>\n

The five-day graduation is to be held at the university until May 27.<\/p>\n

Of the 12,474 graduands, 6,538 are female, representing 52 percent while 5,936 are male, representing 48 percent. This shows a one percent drop in the number of male students and a one percent increase in the number of female students who are graduating this year compared to last year.<\/p>\n

During the 71st graduation, of the 12,550 students who graduated, 6,433 (51 percent) were female while 6,117 (49 percent) were male.<\/p>\n
