{"id":32480,"date":"2022-06-13T14:54:15","date_gmt":"2022-06-13T14:54:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/uganda\/all-news\/kenya-fresh-tax-on-uganda-eggs-sets-stage-for-another-trade-war"},"modified":"2022-06-13T15:18:08","modified_gmt":"2022-06-13T15:18:08","slug":"kenya-fresh-tax-on-uganda-eggs-sets-stage-for-another-trade-war","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/uganda\/all-news\/kenya-fresh-tax-on-uganda-eggs-sets-stage-for-another-trade-war","title":{"rendered":"Kenya fresh tax on Uganda eggs sets stage for another trade war"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Africa-Press &#8211; Uganda. <\/strong><\/span>Kenya and Uganda are staring at another round of trade wars after Nairobi reintroduced a levy on eggs imported from the neighbouring country.<br \/>\nUganda says Kenya is now taxing its eggs at a rate of $0.6 (just over Shs2,000) a tray, bringing back a levy that had been suspended last December following bilateral talks between Kampala and Nairobi.<br \/>\nUgandan traders have protested the move, saying it does not augur well for trade between the two countries.<br \/>\n\u201cThe implementation of levies on Ugandan eggs by Kenya is a bad policy and in violation of the East African Community policy of free movement of goods and services originating from the member states,\u201d Godfrey Oundo Ogwabe, the chairperson Uganda National Cross-Border Trade told the Monitor.<br \/>\nKenya&#8217;s Livestock PS Harry Kimtai said the charges could be a normal levy that is imposed on imports.<br \/>\n\u201cI do not have specific information on the tax but this could be the normal levy that the Kenya Revenue Authority imposes on imports,\u201d he said.<br \/>\nThe new trade tiff comes at a time when the two countries are yet to resolve a long-standing dispute on milk after Kenya barred Uganda\u2019s dairy products in 2019.<br \/>\nKenya had in the last two years restricted the exports of poultry and dairy products from Uganda, straining the relationship between the two countries. The issue on poultry was resolved after Uganda threatened to ban Nairobi from exporting its goods to the landlocked neighbour.<br \/>\nThe Ugandan cabinet had in November directed its Agriculture ministry to identify and list Kenyan products that will be banned by Kampala \u201cin a short time\u201d in retaliation to Kenya\u2019s continued restriction on its agricultural products.<br \/>\nKey agricultural exports to Uganda from Kenya include palm oil at Ksh7.2 billion ($61.5 million) in 2020, sorghum (Ksh1.4 billion or $12 million), vegetables (Ksh311 million or $2.6 million) and legumes (Ksh200 million or $1.7 million).<br \/>\nKenya and Uganda have for long had trade fights but the latest hostilities between the two East African Community states began brewing in December 2019, when Kenya stopped importing Ugandan milk, particularly the Lato brand.<br \/>\nIn 2020, Kenya blocked Ugandan sugar and sugarcanes, costing traders who were exporting raw cane to sugar mills billions of shillings as the raw material was left to rot on trucks at the border.<br \/>\n<b>*Written by Gerald Andae<\/b><\/p>\n<p><strong>For More News And Analysis About <a href=\"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/uganda\">Uganda<\/a> Follow <a href=\"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/\">Africa-Press<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Africa-Press &#8211; Uganda.
