Africa-Press – Uganda. <\/strong><\/span>Speaker of Uganda\u2019s Parliament Ms Anita Among on Tuesday warned all candidates participating the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) elections not to engage in voter bribery activities lest they be disqualified.<\/p>\n

Addressing journalists on the forthcoming EALA elections slated for September 29, 2022 at Parliament, Ms Among issued a string of precautionary directives which lawmakers of the 11th Parliament have to strictly adhere to during the voting process.<\/p>\n

\u201cAny candidate who involves him or herself in acts of bribery or other practices contrary to accepted practices shall be disqualified,\u201d Ms Among warned adding that, \u201call candidates are required to conduct themselves with decorum and in respect to parliamentary practices.\u201d<\/p>\n

The voters who comprise lawmakers of the 11th Parliament will this Thursday go to polls to choose nine candidates from the 28 Ugandans nominated for EALA representation. The nominated candidates include members of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM), Democratic Party (DP), Uganda People\u2019s Congress (UPC), JEEMA and independent candidates.<\/p>\n

Last week, Parliament specifically indicated that the NRM had nominated six candidates, four from opposition parties and other 18 candidates contesting as independents.<\/p>\n

Unlike other opposition political parties with representation in the 11th Parliament, the opposition wing with majority representation, the National Unity Platform (NUP) has insisted that it will not field candidates in the said election.<\/p>\n

Issues caution Ebola<\/p>\n

Ms Among also urged all legislators to strictly adhere to the guidance given by the Ministry of Health in the bid to contain and tackle the deadly Ebola that was first confirmed in Mubende district which is now the epicenter of the virus with 23 people so far confirmed dead.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs we wait for guidance from His Excellency the President in his address to the country tomorrow [Wednesday evening], I also ask all candidates to be conscious of not only the Covid-19 protocols but also what is required to keep Ebola at bay,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
