{"id":41194,"date":"2022-12-05T11:04:55","date_gmt":"2022-12-05T11:04:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/uganda\/all-news\/former-cj-odoki-tips-lawyers-on-offices"},"modified":"2022-12-05T11:04:55","modified_gmt":"2022-12-05T11:04:55","slug":"former-cj-odoki-tips-lawyers-on-offices","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/uganda\/all-news\/former-cj-odoki-tips-lawyers-on-offices","title":{"rendered":"Former CJ Odoki tips lawyers on offices"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Africa-Press &#8211; Uganda. <\/strong><\/span>Former Chief Justice (CJ) Benjamin Odoki has advised lawyers on the importance of having respectable offices.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLawyers should stop operating from bufundas (clumsy offices) and instead have modern chambers,\u201d Justice Oboki said last Friday during the commissioning of ABMAK Associates, Advocates and Legal Consults building in Kampala.<\/p>\n<p>He also scoffed at some lawyers whom he said operate from very small offices that he referred to as \u201cgarages\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome lawyers operate in garages, which make clients to lose credibility and trust in them hence losing on business,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>To that effect, the former head of Judiciary applauded the chambers of ABMAK for meeting the required standards under the Advocates (Inspection and Approval of Chambers) Regulations 2005, which require each advocate to have separate offices for privacy during client interviews.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am commending you for setting yourself apart as people who will change Uganda,\u201d Justice Odoki said.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Hakim Muwonge, a partner at ABMAK Advocates, said they have been able to achieve what they have because of partnering and understanding the objectives of their clients.<\/p>\n<p>Likewise, Mr Henry Kalisa, the chief executive officer of ABMAK Advocates, said they started in a small office in 2009 but kept on pushing to have respectable chambers.<\/p>\n<p>Senior presidential advisor Fred Kabagambe asked lawyers to explore and venture in other places outside Uganda.<\/p>\n<p>Legal advertising is prohibited in Uganda under the Advocates Act, which protects the most important ethical interests of advocates and their clients.
