{"id":44298,"date":"2023-02-03T21:15:17","date_gmt":"2023-02-03T21:15:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/uganda\/all-news\/intern-doctor-arrested-for-soliciting-bribes-from-patients"},"modified":"2023-02-03T21:49:12","modified_gmt":"2023-02-03T21:49:12","slug":"intern-doctor-arrested-for-soliciting-bribes-from-patients","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/uganda\/all-news\/intern-doctor-arrested-for-soliciting-bribes-from-patients","title":{"rendered":"Intern doctor arrested for soliciting bribes from patients"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Africa-Press &#8211; Uganda. <\/strong><\/span>Police in Soroti are holding an intern doctor for allegedly soliciting money from patients at Soroti Regional Referral Hospital.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Soroti DPC, Mr Twaha Buyinza, the intern doctor was arrested Thursday morning after a tip-off from one of the patients.<\/p>\n<p>The suspect is a third-year student at Soroti University and has been practising medicine at Soroti Hospital.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Buyinza said until Thursday, cases of medical officers soliciting money from patients had become rampant at the facility.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe found the suspect with Shs148,000 that he had allegedly collected from different patients who had come to seek medication at the diabetes unit,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Benzy Omoya, the Soroti Hospital Principal Hospital Administrator described the action of the intern doctor as an abuse of the work ethics.<\/p>\n<p>The arrest comes at a time when Soroti regional referral hospital is grappling with drug shortages as a result of the failure by National Medical Stores (NMS) to supply adequate medicines to hospitals and health centres across the country.<\/p>\n<p>Soroti City RCC, Mr Peter Pex Paak, encouraged patients and their caregivers to always report the errant medical officers who solicit bribes in order to work on them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMedication at government facilities has to be free, and anyone got taking money from patients will be arrested,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>For More News And Analysis About <a href=\"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/uganda\">Uganda<\/a> Follow <a href=\"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/\">Africa-Press<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Africa-Press &#8211; Uganda.
