{"id":4456,"date":"2021-02-16T21:03:09","date_gmt":"2021-02-16T21:03:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/uganda\/?p=4456"},"modified":"2021-02-16T17:10:22","modified_gmt":"2021-02-16T17:10:22","slug":"cricket-cranes-take-to-camp-to-build-culture","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/uganda\/all-news\/cricket-cranes-take-to-camp-to-build-culture","title":{"rendered":"Cricket Cranes take to camp to build culture"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/\">Africa-Press<\/a> &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/uganda\">Uganda<\/a>. <\/strong><\/span>Laurence Mahatlane has arguably been the busiest national coach since his arrival in the country late last year.<\/p>\n<p>The South African has taken to his work as national men\u2019s cricket team coach with zeal, running two T20s and a pair of 50-Over matches at Lugogo.<\/p>\n<p>The Cricket Cranes hadn\u2019t had their steam following an empty 2020 due to the coronavirus but with eyes on the second round of the ICC Cricket World Cup Challenge League B in Jersey from September 1-14.<\/p>\n<p>While it is still seven months away, Mahatlane and his technical team have picked a 26-man squad for a week\u2019s camp at Santa Maria Health Resort in Entebbe.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s been a while since we were together,\u201d said Mahatlane\u2019s assistant Jackson Ogwang.\u201cThis camp is mainly to bond as a team and understand our values, mission and vision&#8230; to make the players value the badge and understand why they play for the Cranes.\u201dCamping and team bonding are norms in cricket, especially for the top 12 ICC Test cricket playing nations.<\/p>\n<p>And with Mahatlane\u2019s experience coupled with Covid-19 disruptions, Uganda Cricket Association wants to shore up this culture.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to get out of this camp well knowing what we are as a team. It\u2019s going to be the norm, where we get a retreat to have such,\u201d team manager Jackson Kavuma said.<\/p>\n<p>The selected players for the camp have impressed on the crease in Mahatlane\u2019s eyes.Most notably, former skipper Davis Karashani is back in the national fold for the first time since opting to retire after a 13-run defeat to USA at the bizarre ICC World Cricket League Division Three in 2017.<\/p>\n<p>However, top-order batsmen Roger Mukasa, Zephaniah Arinaitwe and Robinson Obuya have not made the grade.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve held trial games. Zephaniah and Obuya are the unfortunate ones to miss out from a competitive batting group,\u201d explained Ogwang.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt gives them the opportunity to rethink their game and work harder. Besides, we\u2019ll get back together after camp.
