Africa-Press – Uganda. <\/strong><\/span>On the 9th of this month the government of the Republic of Uganda and Cuba celebrated the 49th Anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two nations.<\/p>\nThe Cuban embassy also recognized the opening of Uganda\u2019s diplomatic mission in Havana the capital city of Cuba.<\/p>\n
Uganda and Cuba’s political relations have increased over the past years bu the strengthening of bilateral exchange between the two countries’ Foreign Ministries, the ruling parties-the National Resistance Movement (NRM) of Uganda and the Cuban Communist Party as well as the beginning of relations between youth and student movements from both countries.<\/p>\n
Cooperation projects<\/b><\/p>\n
Last year while the two nations were marking the 48th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations, officials at Mbarara University of Science and Technology in Uganda said that they have greatly benefited from the relationship, since 1989, making it 33 years of the partnership.<\/p>\n
According to Cuban Ambassador to Uganda, Rwanda, and Burundi, His Excellence Dr. Tania Perez Xiques, the partnership with MUST was the leading bilateral cooperation project, this was initiated by the President of Uganda Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, who requested the then Cuba President Fidel Castro to support Uganda in her cause to promote Science and Technology by sending Cuban Professors to work and skill human Resource and in different departments under Faculty of Medicine in Uganda.<\/p>\n
The continued support by Cuban expatriates has benefited both Ugandans and Cubans. This is because they have experienced professional and personal development as well as giving back to Ugandans.<\/p>\n
Uganda and Cuba have supported each other on international issues, such as Uganda has unconditionally supported the struggle of the Cuban people against the economic, commercial, and financial blockade imposed by the United States among other issues.<\/p>\n
The two governments of Uganda and Cuba have embarked on consolidating, strengthening and expanding the bilateral cooperation between the two countries for a win-win situation.<\/p>\n
Efforts are being made with regard to cooperation projects of mutual benefits to both peoples namely: the necessary enhancement or bilateral trade, the renewal and expansion of sports cooperation, the establishment of academic exchange between Cuban and Ugandan university institutions, and the development of projects in the educational sector, among others.<\/p>\n
With the challenge of leveraging the two countries’ close cultural roots and natural endowments, as the main wealth of cultural and tourist exchange, the launch of the programme for the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations to be celebrated in 2024, will have as its main motivation the promotion and implementation of all the projects being crafted, together with the promotion of greater mutual understanding between the two people.<\/p>\n
In this year in which Cuba serves as Chair of the Group of 77+ China and Uganda prepare to take over from her in 2024 and at the same time assume the Chair of Non-Aligned Movement, the commitments of both governments trancing the bilateral sphere as they affirm their responsibilities in the defense of multilateralism and the right of the countries of tile South to development.<\/p>\n
The government of Cuba supported the African people in the Anti Colonial and anti – Apartheid Struggle and they also sacrificed citing the eight-day Cuito Cuanavale battle in Angola.<\/p>\n
The eight-day Cuito Cuanavale battle in Angola marked the beginning of the end of white minority domination in southern Africa, the dismantling of the apartheid system, and the total liberation of Africa.<\/p>\n
Uganda and Cuba’s bilateral ties<\/b><\/p>\n
Both countries established diplomatic relations on 9th May 1974. Uganda and Cuba have enjoyed a close friendship and supported each other at international fora through the Non-Allied Movement, G77, and at the United Nations on strategic political and socio-economic interests.<\/p>\n
The government of Cuba has<\/b><\/p>\n
for years supported Uganda\u2019s ruling party NRM formerly National Resistance Army (NRA) and the Uganda People\u2019s Defense Force (UPDF) Medical Department in addition to training NRA personnel in the late 1980s.<\/p>\n
Last year, Uganda and Cuba agreed to identify possible areas of bilateral cooperation and collaboration including Construction and Engineering.<\/p>\n
Uganda’s export to Cuba was USD 174.37 Thousand in 2018, according to the United Nations COMTRADE database on international trade. Uganda’s export to Cuba includes fish, crustaceans, mollusks, and aquatic invertebrates which were valued at USD 174.37 in 2018, other made textile articles, and set, and worn clothes valued at USD2.5 thousand in 2016.<\/p>\n
Cuba can also buy food products like maize, powdered milk, and beans from Ugandan farmers in exchange for Cuban products such as pharmaceuticals just by exchange without money.<\/p>\n
