Africa-Press<\/a> – Uganda<\/a>. <\/strong><\/span>National Unity Platform (NUP) party leader Robert Kyagulanyi, alias Bobi Wine, yesterday reportedly suggested to councillors and mayors who subscribe to his party that he would opt for defiance activities to challenge President Museveni\u2019s government, Daily Monitor has learnt. Sources, who attended the meeting at Mr Kyagulanyi\u2019s home in Magere, Wakiso District, however, told Daily Monitor that Bobi Wine was not categorical on the decision for a defiance campaign, but used proverbs throughout his address that pointed to that.<\/p>\n

Sources said Mr Kyagulanyi, without delving into details of his defiance plan, hinted on calling on the public to reclaim their power.\u201cHe did not give details of what he meant exactly because the people were many in the meeting and it was not safe for him to divulge details. He said the councillors are going to be the kingpins of the next course of action,\u201d the source said.<\/p>\n

Mr Joel Ssenyonyi, the NUP spokesperson, said there was nothing much spoken in the meeting except emphasizing the key issues that had been talked about during Mr Kyagulanyi\u2019s address to the media earlier. \u201cI am not aware of the information about the defiance but yes, we have asked our councillors to continue empowering the population about the power they have ,\u201d Mr Ssenyonyi said in an interview.<\/p>\n

Work for the people<\/b><\/p>\n

The meeting, which lasted about an hour, started with a briefing to the media where Mr Kyagulanyi warned the NUP leaders to avoid internal fights for \u201csmall positions\u201d and focus on what he termed as the ultimate goal of changing the country\u2019s leadership.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is a reason why people voted us into those positions but it is not the time to celebrate. We have not won the entire battle because our ambition has and is always to remove a dictator. We need to tell the people whom we represent that power belongs to them and the fight to give it back to them has not yet ended,\u201d Mr Kyagulanyi said.<\/p>\n

Police spokesperson, Mr Fred Enanga, in an interview with Daily Monitor yesterday said they are aware that NUP has been recruiting various people across the country through their district coordinators to carry out protests but added that they have prepared for them.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is nothing in the Constitution called the public court but this is a rhetoric that is used by politicians who claim that power belongs to them. So they tell them that they are a court. If they try to do anything, we are ready for them because we shall not allow security of the wananchi (citizens) be compromised,\u201d Mr Enanga said. Mr Innocent Tegusulwa, one of the councillors that attended the meeting said: \u201cWe have been briefed to focus on serving the people through servant leadership and stop fighting for small positions. I think this is the way to go if we are to achieve anything this country.\u201d<\/p>\n

The meeting at Bobi Wine\u2019s residence went on under police and army watch as the security forces deployed outside the gates of his home. The officers, one in a counter-terrorism uniform, another in an Uganda People\u2019s Defence Forces (UPDF) uniform and others in civilian clothes left the premises shortly after the departure of all the NUP leaders.<\/p>\n

In 2011, four-time presidential candidate Dr Kizza Besigye declared a defiance campaign to challenge what he called the government\u2019s repressive actions and urged the population into the \u201cWalk to Work\u201d campaign, which was ostensibly rallying people to walk to workplaces in disapproval of rising fuel prices in the country at that time.
