Africa-Press – Uganda. <\/strong><\/span>The ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party political strategy is informed by science and not guesswork, President Museveni has said.<\/p>\n

\u201cNRM politics is politics of science, not guesswork,\u201d Mr Museveni said as he addressed a political rally in Iceme Town Council while campaigning for Mr Samuel Okello Engola, the NRM flag bearer in the forthcoming Oyam North by-election as the vote hunt comes to an end.<\/p>\n

The by-election is scheduled for July 6 after the seat fell vacant following the death of former Minister of State for Labour, Employment and Industrial Relations, Col (Rtd) Charles Okello Engola Macodwogo. The legislator was gunned down by his bodyguard, Pte Wilson Sabiiti on May 2, 2023.<\/p>\n

In attempt to sway the electorate to the NRM candidate\u2019s side, Mr Museveni who has been in power since 1986 when he shot his way to State House through a five-year guerrilla warfare said he\u2019s not looking for anything from government because \u201c have got everything in my home. I have my cows and I\u2019m not getting anything from the government. Even when we were fighting [former president] Idi Amin, we were not looking for anything personal.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cFrom the beginning we were telling you we are here for your good,\u201d added the president who reportedly earns a monthly salary of Shs3.6 million but overseeing a Shs239 billion budget allocated to State House in the new financial year.<\/p>\n

According to him, the late Engola Macodwogo joined NRM because he was a clear-headed cadre and excited over the current prevailing peace in Oyam District.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd that\u2019s what Engola fought for. Once you get kuc (peace) then the next thing you need is otela (leaders). Now leaders are very crucial. If you don\u2019t have leaders, where do you go?\u201d he said, urging the people of Oyam North to choose the right leaders.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou must elect a leader who can show you the way because if you don\u2019t know you may end up in the east instead of going west. Therefore, when leaders come saying, \u2018I want to lead\u2019, I want to lead\u2019, you must look at them [and ask yourself], \u2018Does this one know the way, or will he take us to the forest?\u201d remarked Mr Museveni, 78.<\/p>\n

He urged the voters to elect Okello Engola so that he can work with the government to complete his late father\u2019s unfinished business.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen it comes to this unfortunate situation of getting a replacement, then you\u2019re lucky to get one of the children who has been growing up near him (late Engola). For me, I would go for that boy because I would say in my head, logically, maybe this boy learnt from his father,\u201d Mr Museveni added.<\/p>\n

At the same rally, a handful of members said to be from the opposition parties; Uganda People\u2019s Congress (UPC) and Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) defected to the ruling party.<\/p>\n

Key among them are UPC diehard, also the Prime Minister of Tekwaro Lango or Lago cultural institution, Mr George Ojwang Opota and Mr George Rashid Opio (FDC), a former speaker of Lira District.<\/p>\n

Mr Opio, who spoke on behalf of other defectors, said: \u201cI did everything practically possible within my power to the extent of going to the bush to fight this government but I\u2019m today making an official declaration that I am totally defeated.\u201d<\/p>\n

Oyam District has 16 administrative units, 74 parishes and 1,094 villages with two political constituencies; Oyam South and Oyam North. The area population is about 553, 000 with at least 187,000 registered voters. In Oyam County, 93,000 voters, according to Mr Benson Dila, the district chairman.<\/p>\n
