{"id":55846,"date":"2023-09-22T11:32:43","date_gmt":"2023-09-22T11:32:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/uganda\/all-news\/what-amuriat-nandala-nomination-means-for-fdc"},"modified":"2023-09-22T12:59:46","modified_gmt":"2023-09-22T12:59:46","slug":"what-amuriat-nandala-nomination-means-for-fdc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/uganda\/all-news\/what-amuriat-nandala-nomination-means-for-fdc","title":{"rendered":"What Amuriat, Nandala nomination means for FDC"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Africa-Press &#8211; Uganda. <\/strong><\/span>The electoral commission of the crisis-wracked opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) has duly nominated the party\u2019s embattled leaders for a likely re-election ahead of a controversial high-level poll.<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, FDC\u2019s Electoral Commission (EC) chief Boniface Toterebuka Bamwenda cleared secretary general Nathan Nandala Mafabi\u2019s sole candidature in addition to allowing incumbent president Patrick Amuriat to run again for a 5-year term through the October 6 National Executive Committee (NEC) vote.<\/p>\n<p>By press time Thursday afternoon, EC had only approved founding president Dr Kizza Besigye\u2019s one-time ally Moses Byamugisha to yet again challenge Amuriat\u2019s bid.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m back [in the race]. People have been asking whether I belong to the Katonga or Najjanankumbi faction but there\u2019s only one FDC,\u201d said Byamugisha who contested against Amuriat in 2017.<\/p>\n<p>Since 2017, dozens of top FDC leaders have quit or embraced rival internal factions with each accusing the other of plotting an internal coup, following a series of scathing counter-allegations.<\/p>\n<p>Besides, at least 20 of nearly 40 districts that comprise FDC\u2019s Western Uganda NEC electorate have been locked out of the on-going electoral processes limited to a two-week campaign period.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t think they are running away from FDC. There\u2019s simply a failure in management to explain the contradictions that we\u2019re having,\u201d Byamugisha noted in his post-nomination remarks at Najjanankumbi.<\/p>\n<p>On his part, Amuriat is promising FDC a \u201cbrighter future\u201d, but in the face of a lively ouster declared on September 19, against his leadership and its immediate allies, by the Katonga faction through its parallel national delegates conference.<\/p>\n<p>In a political party whose adherents are rooted in the ideologue of defiance, Amuriat and Nandala Thursday afternoon vowed their resolute to resist pressure from Katonga.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTheir latest attempt to get into the FDC leadership through the ventilator through the delegates conference hastily organized by party chairman (Wasswa Birigwa) has failed,\u201d Amuriat said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are here. We are in charge. Those leaders who assigned themselves duties are leaders of Katonga, Kizza Besigye and Birigwa. They have no bearing at all on the leadership of Najjanankumbi,\u201d Amuriat told a handful gathering on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Still on Thursday, veteran politician Jack Sabiiti had been nominated for the post of FDC&#8217;s national chairman, four days after incumbent Birigwa denied picking forms to renew his term as the head of the party&#8217;s supreme organ- under the Najjanankumbi establishment.<\/p>\n<p>Amidst looming legal battles, the Katonga unit has warned that chances for dialogue are waning, further hinting that plans to overrun Amuriat\u2019s leadership are imminent in attempts to re-capture plot 1164 along Entebbe Road.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will get to Najjanankumbi and ask the impostors to go away.
