Africa-Press – Uganda. <\/strong><\/span>The introduction of a video conferencing facility is to help reduce the number of inmates at the Gulu main prison.<\/b><\/p>\n

According to Mutebi Ronald the officer in charge of the Gulu Main Prison, as of 23rd of October 2023 they have 1430 inmates of which 644 are convicts, and 786 are on remand.<\/p>\n

However, the introduction of the video conferencing facility in August 2023 has led to a drop in the number of inmates on remand by 120.<\/p>\n

The video conferencing system comprises a digital screen that is connected to a camera. During court sessions, this system is connected to the system at Gulu High Court where a presiding judge cyber faces inmates. This has cut transport costs, and time and has helped to speed up the process.<\/p>\n

As the facility continues to struggle with space due to congestion, Northern Regional Prison Commander Orik Margaret requests a solar-powered system.<\/p>\n

She explains that the unreliable electricity supply in Gulu City has made it a necessity for the Gulu main prison to install a solar-powered system to continue operating the video conferencing facility.<\/p>\n

In terms of education, Orik is calling for the construction of more classes. Gulu Main Prison currently has 300 primary school learners with 26 support staff.<\/p>\n

The inmates\u2019 representative (names withheld) requested nonscholastic materials such as tables, toilet chairs for the disabled inmates, tools for the carpentry workshop, cultural props and costumes, and legal books.<\/p>\n

The inmates also want an expansion of the reading library, provision of daily newspapers, and a modification of the kitchen from charcoal to electricity-powered.<\/p>\n

But above all both the inmates and the prison request for the speed up of the court sessions.<\/p>\n

The visit of the UN envoy to Gulu Main Prison is part of the build-up to the international celebrations of UN Day which will be celebrated in Gulu City.<\/p>\n
