Africa-Press – Uganda. <\/strong><\/span>The Iteso cultural leader has called on the government to establish a fish processing factory in Teso.<\/b><\/p>\n

Emorimor Paul Sande Emolot Etomeileng, while celebrating his first coronation anniversary in Soroti Town on Sunday under the theme \u201crevamping Teso agric production and food security\u201d, said the factory will boost the fishing sector and add value as well as provide market for aquatic products.<\/p>\n

He proposed that the factory be established in either Kadungulu or Kagwara landing sites next to Lake Kyoga in Serere District, adding that it could also address the challenges of unemployment among the youth in the sub-region.<\/p>\n

\u201cSome of our people, especially those in Kagwara and Kadungulu have abandoned rice farming for fish farming. The factory would inspire them to invest more in fish farming as a business,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

He added that said Teso Sub-region has many water bodies such as Lake Kyoga, Lake Opeta, and Lake Bisina among others which are home to several species of fish.<\/p>\n

Emorimor Emolot also commended the government for promoting citrus farming in the sub-region.<\/p>\n

He, however, appealed to the government to expand the capacity of the Soroti Fruit Factory to absorb more fruits, saying at the moment it absorbs a small quantity.<\/p>\n

The Emorimor also urged President Museveni to fulfill pledges he made regarding boost the people\u2019s livelihoods.<\/p>\n

Some of the pledges include infrastructure development, especially the tarmacking of Kumi-Kagwara road via Ngora; improvement of Soroti-Amuria-Kotido road via Abim to facilitate trade and the cattle compensation programme, which he said has stagnated after its launch on March 2022.<\/p>\n

\u201cI know that the government started the process of compensation. As you know the wealth, development and prosperity of Iteso once came from the cow. Remind the President to speed up the process so that our people can revive their economy,\u201d Emorimor Emolot said.<\/p>\n

He, however, commended the President for appointing Ms Jessica Alupo and other officials from Teso Sub-region to key government positions.<\/p>\n

Ms Alupo, the Vice President who represented Mr Museveni at the function, applauded the Emorimor for his efforts in uniting Iteso and promoting one of the principles of Pan-Africanism.<\/p>\n

She said the Kumi-Ngora-Serere road is already in the work plan.<\/p>\n

In a message read by the vice president, the President encouraged the public to embrace organic farming to boost food security.<\/p>\n

He cautioned the public against engaging in cheap politics and propaganda from non-patriotic and selfish members of the nation.<\/p>\n

\u201cLet\u2019s seek knowledge and understanding in the things that benefit our livelihoods as far as food security is concerned. Let us work hard and take advantage of government development programmes such as Emyooga, Parish Development Model and bring about positive changes in our institutions,\u201d Mr Museveni said.<\/p>\n
