Africa-Press – Uganda. <\/strong><\/span>Hajia Abibata accuses EC officials, incumbent MP of rigging, rejects poll resultsFamilies and friends of persons reported missing by the National Unity Platform have petitioned the High Court in Kampala to compel the government to account for them. The petitioners say they chose to go to court after approaching various law enforcement authorities for help, with little or no progress.<\/b><\/p>\n

In the petition filed through their lawyer George Musisi, these say they believe the missing persons were abducted by state security agencies.\u201cThere are several twists to these cases. We have gathered all the affidavits of the 18 cases and three others who were killed, and tendered them in court. We want the court to compel the government to account for these people,\u201d lawyer George Musisi emotionally stated.<\/p>\n

The petition bears a long list of the missing persons, among them John Bosco Kibalama, Damulira John, Wangolo Shafik.<\/p>\n

The angry petitioners, who say they have knocked on the doors of different law enforcement departments and not found justice, hope that the court route will be more successful.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have filed a case with the Police and the Uganda Human Rights Commission, but they keep tossing us here and there. Let\u2019s now leave it for the courts of law,\u201d said one Kiganda Charles, a brother to John Ddamulira.<\/p>\n

The Leader of Opposition in Parliament, Joel Ssenyonyi, rallied the relatives of the reported missing persons not to give up, despite the issue being distorted by politicians.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe won\u2019t give up,\u201d Ssenyonyi said. \u201cWe will try all options at our disposal to free our people under captivity.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ssenyonyi\u2019s remarks come in the wake of a confession by one, Moses Simbwa, made during the recently concluded NRM Liberation Day celebrations, to receiving bribes from the opposition to claim that he had been abducted by security agencies, an allegation that caught the president\u2019s eye.<\/p>\n

Court allocated the petition to Justice Esther Nambayo for hearing on April 8, 2024.<\/p>\n
