It all started when Muhoozi blamed the former President of Kenya Uhuru Kenyatta for not standing for a third term in the August election. In various tweets, he had threatened to invade and capture Nairobi within two weeks, voiced support for Tigray rebels fighting the Ethiopian government, and expressed approval of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The statement which was issued by the Defence spokesperson Brig Gen Felix Kulayigye confirmed that although Lt Gen Muhoozi dropped from being the Commander of Land Forces, he was promoted to a four-star general and will continue with duties as senior a military advisor to his father President Museveni.

Defiance

Muhoozi has recently been holding rallies, mobilizing support around the country, which has drawn criticism in some quarters. According to the Ugandan constitution, a serving military officer is not allowed to be involved in political activities. But Muhoozi ignored that, not only voicing his opinions but also making his political ambitions public. Known as a controversial figure, the now military head has become increasingly involved in the political arena, in breach of the protocols. It all started in April 2022 when, Lt-Gen Muhoozi (MK), signalled his desire to go public about his presidential ambitions when he auspiciously turned his 48th birthday celebrations into a national event. The first son’s expression of interest in succeeding his father who has been in power for now 38 years since 1986, came after almost a decade of speculations. On the 7th of February 2024, Muhoozi formed the Patriotic League of Uganda movement (PLU). The group is considered a civic organization rather than a political party to possibly sidestep any constitutional issues.

Promotion’s mixed analysis

Muhoozi’s promotion was announced a few minutes to midnight. As soon as the news was aired social media went viral with mixed reactions. Some analysts say the appointment puts Museveni’s son in line to be president – but only if Museveni, in power for nearly four decades, is unable to continue. Simon Peter a journalist reacted by saying that the appointment of Gen. Muhoozi as CDF was a strategic move by his father. According to him, Museveni was not impressed with how PLU was gaining political traction. He added that the plan now is to have Gen. MK lead the Army as he creates Military allies, then sometime after 2026, President Museveni will retire from active military service and appoint him Vice-President, then slightly before 2031, Museveni will retire and Gen. MK will become interim President of Uganda. Ruth Kalema a political analyst said “I like how Mr. M7 has mechanically put the MK project out of action by deploying Muhoozi, Balamu, and some other MK project allies. That chaos is now off the political scene. It’s a good break for us as citizens”. Said, Ruth Yunusu⁩ Kanaaba a journalist said that President Museveni by appointing his son as CDF has used his political “chessboard” strategically though in a somewhat predictable fashion. He added that many journalists had predicted this year that MK would move so close to “power” this year with opposition groups caught off guard and unprepared, that’s if they have anything they can stop. However, Simon Nyanzi differed with Yunus by saying that Muhoozi’s appointment was to make him and other PLU members who were appointed in the cabinet busy and divert them from the useless PLU for now. Museveni, 79, has denied speculation that he is grooming his only son as his successor, especially as Uganda’s general election is scheduled for early 2026.

The MK projects

The “Muhoozi Kainerugaba Project” was coined by one Gen David Sejusa in 2013 when he revealed that President Museveni was grooming his son Muhozi to succeed him when he retires. But President Museveni and Gen Muhoozi repeatedly denied the allegation. After the much-hyped birthday celebrations in 2022, which included some activities like a marathon and a football match, Lt Gen Muhoozi seems to have gathered the courage to publicly express his interest in the presidency. On May 1st Gen Muhoozi via Twitter his favourite social media channel made the long-awaited announcement. “When Team MK wins power in this country, which we will, our first action will be to increase the sports budget,” Muhoozi said on Twitter now x adding that Team MK will announce their political program soon. President Museveni has never publicly come out to announce whether his son will succeed him when he retires. But on 24 April during Gen Muhoozi’s birthday celebrations at State House, the president hinted that his son would be taking charge when he said that Gen Muhoozi “is impatient” with the corrupt people and will fight them.

For More News And Analysis About Uganda Follow Africa-Press

Faridah N Kulumba Africa-Press – Uganda.
