{"id":7647,"date":"2021-04-04T17:13:23","date_gmt":"2021-04-04T17:13:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/uganda\/?p=7647"},"modified":"2021-04-04T16:00:39","modified_gmt":"2021-04-04T16:00:39","slug":"shs50b-tororo-mbale-road-works-start","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/uganda\/all-news\/shs50b-tororo-mbale-road-works-start","title":{"rendered":"Shs50b Tororo, Mbale road works start"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/\">Africa-Press<\/a> &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/uganda\">Uganda<\/a>. <\/strong><\/span>The rehabilitation of roads worth Shs19.7b in Tororo Municipality under the second phase of the Uganda Support to Municipal Infrastructure Development Programme (USMID) has kicked off.<\/p>\n<p>The USMID project coordinator, Mr Isaac Mutenyo, while handing over road construction sites to the contractor, Dott Services Construction Company, on Wednesday, said they expect the works to be completed within 15 months.<\/p>\n<p>Among the roads that will be tarmacked include Uhuru Drive measuring 1.5km and Rock Crescent Drive measuring 0.6km. The works will include installation of street lighting, building of walkways and drainage systems.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI ask the leadership to ensure that contractor does quality work and within the stipulated timeframe if we want the project be renewed,\u201d Mr Mutenyo said.<\/p>\n<p>He, however, thanked the Tororo Municipality leadership for effectively managing the first projects, saying it enabled them qualify for additional funding.<\/p>\n<p>The Tororo Resident District Commissioner (RDC), Mr Were Yahaya, asked the contractor to ensure quality work.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy office will not tolerate anything apart from quality. The contractor should also respect the timeline in the contract bid,\u201d he said.The Tororo Town mayor, Mr John Opio, applauded the government for the extended support.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI should tell you that initially, business in Tororo Town would end as early as 6:30pm but as we talk now, business goes up to midnight because of good roads,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Opio also appealed to landlords to renovate their dilapidated buildings in the town in order to match the standards of the new roads under construction.<\/p>\n<p>In Mbale, Mr Joseph Pade Walter, the Commissioner of Urban development at the Ministry of Lands, Housing and Urban Development, while inspecting the on-going road construction works, asked Dott Services to desist from shoddy work.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMbale City had a history of shoddy work but what I have seen today shows that the work is moving forward,&#8221; Mr Walter said.<\/p>\n<p>The roads under construction include Naboa, Cathedral Avenue, Nkokonjeru, Mumias and Manafwa.<\/p>\n<p>The Shs30b project is expected to be complete in 12 months.Some of the roads that were upgraded in the first phase include Republic Street, Pallisa, Nabuyonga Rise and Mugisu Hill.<\/p>\n<p>They were constructed by Plinth Technical Services Ltd and later by Zhong Mei, a Chinese company.The Mbale City mayor, Mr mutwalib Zandya, said USMID projects have greatly improved road networks in the city.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Africa-Press &#8211; Uganda.
