{"id":91659,"date":"2025-01-18T06:09:29","date_gmt":"2025-01-18T06:09:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/uganda\/all-news\/govt-takes-over-vehicle-inspection-from-sgs"},"modified":"2025-01-21T13:07:05","modified_gmt":"2025-01-21T13:07:05","slug":"govt-takes-over-vehicle-inspection-from-sgs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/uganda\/all-news\/govt-takes-over-vehicle-inspection-from-sgs","title":{"rendered":"Govt Takes over Vehicle Inspection from SGS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Africa-Press &#8211; Uganda. <\/strong><\/span><b>The government has assumed control of vehicle inspection services previously managed by Socie\u0301te\u0301 Ge\u0301ne\u0301rale de Surveillance (SGS), ending years of controversy surrounding the company\u2019s operations.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>The handover ceremony, held in Namanve, Mukono District, was presided over by Works and Transport Minister Gen Edward Katumba Wamala.<\/p>\n<p>SGS began operations in 2015 with a mandate to improve road safety through vehicle inspections.<\/p>\n<p>However, the company faced significant resistance from the public and Members of Parliament, who criticized its fees as exorbitant.<\/p>\n<p>This opposition led to lawsuits and political interference, ultimately prompting the company to terminate its contract.<\/p>\n<p>To compensate SGS for its investments, the government will pay Shs109 billion, of which Shs30 billion has already been disbursed.<\/p>\n<p>The takeover includes all seven inspection centres across the country.<\/p>\n<p>Bageya Waiswa, permanent secretary at the Ministry of Works and Transport, highlighted the challenges that plagued SGS\u2019s operations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe lawsuits in court and parliamentary opposition made operations unsustainable,\u201d he noted.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel Gartmann, vice president of SGS, expressed gratitude to the government for the opportunity to operate in Uganda but lamented the resistance to the initiative.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are thankful to the government but disappointed by the opposition faced by a project meant to enhance road safety,\u201d Gartmann said.<\/p>\n<p>State Minister for Roads Musa Ecweru criticized the early resistance to the project, stressing the importance of vehicle inspections for reducing road accidents.<\/p>\n<p>Gen. Katumba Wamala reassured motorists that the government\u2019s management would make the services more affordable.<\/p>\n<p>The revised annual fees are Shs49,500 for passenger cars, Shs5,500 for motorcycles (Boda Bodas), and Shs60,000 for heavy vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery Ugandan motorist will now be able to afford vehicle inspections. We urge everyone to support this initiative to make our roads safer,\u201d Gen Katumba stated.<\/p>\n<p>Vehicle inspections will resume under government control starting this financial year.
