Africa-Press – Uganda. <\/strong><\/span>A total of 15,000 residents in Moyo District are set to benefit from a solar-powered piped water supply and sanitation system valued at Shs14.1 billion.<\/b><\/p>\n

The successful implementation of the Laropi and Lefori Water Supply and Sanitation Systems is expected to provide clean and sustainable water to both host and refugee communities, improve hygiene, and significantly reduce waterborne diseases.<\/p>\n

Funded by the World Bank under the Integrated Water Management and Development Project (IWMDP), the project has a construction timeline of nine months. Once completed, it will serve 18 zones in Laropi Town Council and 15 villages in Lefori Sub-county.<\/p>\n

During the site handover ceremony and stakeholder engagement, Dr. Eng. Francis Tumwine, Assistant Commissioner for Technical Support to Local Governments at the Ministry of Water and Environment, confirmed the source of funding and emphasized the project\u2019s importance in addressing rural water supply challenges.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have financial constraints in providing clean and safe water to residents across the country, but we shall continue sourcing for additional resources to meet the growing needs of the population,\u201d Tumwine said.<\/p>\n

David Kabugo, Principal Engineer at the Ministry, outlined the project scope, which includes the construction of solar-powered piped water systems, installation of a faecal sludge treatment plant, and development of public sanitation facilities.<\/p>\n

Topista Mugwedio, a resident of Laropi Town Council, expressed appreciation for the initiative, stating that piped water systems are vital for rural communities as they enhance health, support livelihoods, and drive development.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs a final consumer, I will ensure I mobilize the community to support the contractor in delivering quality work according to the required procedures,\u201d Mugwedio said.<\/p>\n

Williams Anyama, the Moyo District Local Council V Chairperson, also praised the project, noting that it will improve access to safe water, support public health, and promote environmental sustainability.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis project had experienced delays, but we are grateful that work has finally commenced. It will provide clean and safe water to hundreds of residents in Moyo District,\u201d Anyama said.<\/p>\n

District authorities further highlighted the health benefits, noting that the project will help curb diseases such as cholera, typhoid, and diarrhea, while promoting handwashing, hygiene, and proper waste management.<\/p>\n

Additionally, the new system will provide a reliable year-round water supply, reducing dependence on unsafe sources like rivers and open wells.<\/p>\n
