Africa-Press – Uganda. <\/strong><\/span>The belated International Women\u2019s Day celebrations in Soroti City are now set to proceed peacefully and in unity following a decisive intervention by Soroti City Woman Member of Parliament, Hon. Joan Alobo Acom.<\/b><\/p>\n

In a high-level meeting held on Tuesday, Hon. Alobo brought together key stakeholders, including city councillors, technical staff, members of the women\u2019s council, and the Deputy Resident City Commissioner, Ms. Clair Ayipo, to address a growing rift that had threatened to derail the annual celebration.<\/p>\n

The meeting also included members of a rival organising group led by Ms. Sarah Inachu, a political aspirant for the Woman MP seat.<\/p>\n

The dispute stemmed from parallel preparations that had been initiated by the rival group, reportedly without involving Alobo or following city protocols. This had caused confusion among stakeholders and raised concerns about the unity and purpose of the celebration.<\/p>\n

Alobo, who has consistently championed women\u2019s rights and empowerment in the region, called the meeting as a follow-up to a prior resolution passed by Soroti City councillors that recommended a joint planning effort with the technical team.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis issue of Women\u2019s Day is something very close to my heart,\u201d Alobo stated.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s important that we put our political differences aside and work together in the best interest of the women of Soroti. They deserve to be celebrated with dignity and unity.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her call for reconciliation was met with overwhelming support from those in attendance.<\/p>\n

Deputy Mayor Ipagi Monica praised Alobo\u2019s leadership and timely action. \u201cI thank Hon. Alobo for convening this meeting. It has finally charted a way forward,\u201d she said, urging all stakeholders to unite under her guidance.<\/p>\n

Deputy Resident City Commissioner Clair Ayipo also commended Alobo for her proactive leadership, saying, \u201cYour timely response has brought clarity and unity. This is the leadership we need.\u201d<\/p>\n

One of the major outcomes of the meeting was the agreement to dissolve the rival committee led by Ms. Inachu and form a new, inclusive organising committee.<\/p>\n

This committee is expected to be constituted by Monday to begin coordinated preparations for the event. The decision marked a major step in restoring harmony among the various factions involved.<\/p>\n

It was officially resolved that Soroti City will hold its belated International Women\u2019s Day celebrations on 9th May 2025. However, this year\u2019s event faces a unique challenge: the central government has not allocated the usual Shs 3 million for the celebrations.<\/p>\n

Despite the funding shortfall, stakeholders expressed determination to mobilize resources locally to ensure the event\u2019s success.<\/p>\n

Alobo encouraged all residents, especially women, to come together and contribute in any way they can.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis celebration is about recognising our mothers, sisters, and daughters. We may not have the funds, but we have the spirit, and together we can make this happen,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

The MP\u2019s leadership in organising past Women\u2019s Day events has been noted for its resilience. In 2023, the celebrations were marred by police interference, prompting protests from women in the streets of Soroti. Despite such challenges, Alobo has remained steadfast in her commitment to honor the women of her constituency.<\/p>\n

With the current issues resolved and preparations underway, there is a renewed sense of optimism in Soroti City.<\/p>\n

The 2025 Women\u2019s Day celebration promises to be a symbol of unity, resilience, and the enduring power of women in shaping their communities.<\/p>\n

As the women of Soroti rally together, they do so with the hope that this year\u2019s event will not only celebrate achievements but also inspire collective progress and inclusivity.<\/p>\n
