{"id":99500,"date":"2025-05-06T18:36:05","date_gmt":"2025-05-06T18:36:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/uganda\/all-news\/why-are-you-geh-pastor-ssempa-launches-book-provoking-thought-on-family-faith-and-culture"},"modified":"2025-05-06T19:29:40","modified_gmt":"2025-05-06T19:29:40","slug":"why-are-you-geh-pastor-ssempa-launches-book-provoking-thought-on-family-faith-and-culture","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/uganda\/all-news\/why-are-you-geh-pastor-ssempa-launches-book-provoking-thought-on-family-faith-and-culture","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Why are you Geh?&#8217; \u2013 Pastor Ssempa Launches Book Provoking Thought on Family, Faith and Culture"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Africa-Press &#8211; Uganda. <\/strong><\/span><b>Pastor Martin Ssempa has launched a new book titled Why Are You Geh?, a provocative 500-page manifesto that positions itself as both a personal memoir and a cultural defence of the traditional African family.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>The book, also <b>available<\/b> <b>on<\/b> <b>Amazon,<\/b> was unveiled on April 25 at Hotel Africana in Kampala before an audience of religious and cultural leaders, policymakers, scholars, and students.<\/p>\n<p>The launch event, sponsored by Speaker of Parliament Anita Among\u2014who was away in Rome for Pope Francis\u2019 funeral\u2014was headlined by a message from President Museveni.<\/p>\n<p>Delivered by Minister of Trade David Bahati, the President\u2019s speech urged Ugandans to resist foreign ideologies he said threaten Africa\u2019s family structures and cultural foundations.<\/p>\n<p>Pr Ssempa, a long-time Pentecostal preacher and activist, used the moment to thank President Museveni for what he called \u201cunwavering support in the patriotic struggle to protect our values.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He recounted the personal costs behind writing the book, including public hostility, loss of sponsorships, and legal threats.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI began writing this book when I was being hunted down for standing up for God\u2019s values, our culture, and our nation\u2019s policies,\u201d Ssempa told attendees.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis book is not only the vindication of me and my family but the vindication of all of us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Comedian Patrick Salvador Idringi, who served as master of ceremonies, described Ssempa as \u201ca one-man army\u201d whose persistence had brought the controversial book to life.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe has lost money, lost friends, lost favour\u2014but he kept on going,\u201d Salvador said.<\/p>\n<p>Tracey Ssempa, the author\u2019s wife, offered a rare glimpse into the family\u2019s internal toll.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere were times of separation and emotional terror,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut the God who is a Master Planner chose today\u2014our 33rd wedding anniversary\u2014to let this book be born.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The book\u2019s title references a 2012 television debate between Ssempa and LGBTQ advocate Pepe Julian Onziema on NBS TV, in which Ssempa posed the now-famous question, \u201cWhy are you geh?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The clip has since gone viral, amassing more than 37 million views on YouTube.<\/p>\n<p>But Ssempa said the public fixation on the moment obscures the deeper ideological battle that inspired the book.<\/p>\n<p>In Why Are You Geh?, Ssempa argues that the global LGBTQ movement is being used as a vehicle to impose foreign values on African societies through media, donor aid, and diplomacy.<\/p>\n<p>He outlines what he calls five vulnerable sectors\u2014education, family, culture, church, and international relations\u2014and presents the book as both diagnosis and remedy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is not about hate,\u201d Ssempa insisted. \u201cIt is about defending our children. Uganda is not a \u2018gay killer\u2019\u2014we are a people protecting our culture from ideological evasion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pastor Amon Bwengye, one of the speakers at the launch, recalled Ssempa\u2019s earlier work on HIV prevention and student mentorship.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe didn\u2019t set out to fight homosexuality.
