Africa-Press – Zambia. The rate at which sycophancy is increasing is worrying. Criticism is feedback by the citizens to the rulers. If used constructively criticism can be a valuable ally.
Sadly we are seeing increasing intolerance to criticism, not by the Government or those in Government but by some supporters and some who have appointed themselves to be defenders of the Government.
It is not uncommon to see insults and bullying in the name of defending the UPND government. One UPND member of parliament is reported to have threatened News Diggers with closure, in the same way the Post was closed.
All this is unfortunate and I would like to believe that it does not have the blessings of Government. The fact that those who sing our praises shout loudly and drown the sound of criticism does not mean that the criticism has gone away.
My advice to Government is for it to ignore the praise singers and self appointed defenders of the Government but to pay particular attention to criticism and use it to remedy mistakes or to explain actions. Praise singers have never developed any nation but they manage to destroy leaders. S
