POLICE, LUBOMBO RESIDENTS IN STONES AND TEARGAS CLASH

Africa-Press – Zambia. Police fired teargas to disperse residents of Mazabuka’s Lubombo area that rioted Saturday morning when staff from Office of the Surveyor’s General visited a piece of land embroiled in dispute.

The officers fought running battles with the community members that are opposed to developing a piece of land that they are saying is meant for their animals to graze.

Southern Province Acting Commanding Officer, Alfred Nawa tells Byta FM News that the community members became hostile upon seeing the surveyors who were accompanied by Police.

Nawa explains that the police fired teargas at the mob after they began throwing stones at his officers. He reveals that four people sustained minor injuries in the fracas and the situation has returned back to normal. Nawa, however, says this is not the first time that Lubombo community members have beat up Survey officers visiting their township.
