Africa-Press – Zambia. I have taken time to see the Catherine Phiri vs Kudakwashe boxing bout that the Zimbabwean challenger was deemed to have won. Boxing contests is the reason why I’m not so keen nowadays about it, especially when it comes to final verdicts.
Catherine Phiri fought diligently against her opponent and was until the sixth round in control of the fight. This was despite having to put up with a challenger that was evidently determined not to back down. It was clear from then on that neither boxer put up any estate in the fight to claim it nor did much to derive anything from it.
I have seen many boxing bouts like the Catherine Phiri vs Kudakwashe contest, where home town decisions have decided the outcome. It was not going to be in dispute if by any reasoning of thought by the three judges adjudicating the match had had handed Catherine a reprieve.
It’s only in Zambia where such an outcome would suffice. A foreign boxer coming out victorious for merely putting a brave show? Catherine Phiri didn’t lose to Kudakwashe. She was never under any extreme pressure. Yes, the Zimbabwean might have had the will to go it marathon, but have seen nothing artistic in the way the fight was decided in her favour.
I have watched Zambian boxers putting up similar tests from an historical narrative fighting outside the country and lost. Have heard people put up this argument about boxing that for a challenger to defeat a champion must be convincing by way of a knock out.
