Africa-Press – Zambia. Q. Are we purposely impoverishing ourselves or we’re just a cursed people that can’t make anything sensible out of our land? Zambia announced its first discoveries of oil and gas reserves in 2006 during the reign of late president Levy Patrick Mwanawasa and there were plans to invite foreign companies to conduct exploratory drills in the country.

Samples were taken from various sites in Zambezi and Chavuma, Northwestern Province near the border with Angola. “The microbial analysis showed that 12 sites were positive for oil and six for gas,”

“These results confirmed the presence of oil and gas in the sub-surface of the two districts of Chavuma and Zambezi,” Mwanawasa added.

Following the discovery, Mwanawasa appointed a special cabinet committee headed by Kalombo Mwansa, mines minister, to draw up policies and guidelines to facilitate oil and gas exploration by private companies.

Since then, Zambia has literally done nothing to materialize the oil and gas discovery in various provinces of Zambia. Why aren’t we capitalizing on our precious natural resources for us to strength our economy and develop our country? Does government have any plans to invite international oil companies to come and carry out oil and gas explorations?
